I'm sure you heard of the Carl Sandburg's poem about Chicago, and I change some of the lines of the first stanza and made it into a modern day poem. I took like 2 minutes.

This is Sandurgs's version of the poem, "Chicago"

HOG Butcher for the World,
Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,
Player with Railroads and the Nation’s Freight Handler;
Stormy, husky, brawling,
City of the Big Shoulders:

They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys.
And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again.
And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger.
And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them:
Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.
Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on job, here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the little soft cities;
Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning as a savage pitted against the wilderness,
Building, breaking, rebuilding,
Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with white teeth,
Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young man laughs,
Laughing even as an ignorant fighter laughs who has never lost a battle,
Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse. and under his ribs the heart of the people,
Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of Youth, half-naked, sweating, proud to be Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.

Now, this is my poem.

Multi-Cultural city of the World
Pizza Maker, Magnets of immigrants
Airport traffic and still the nation's transportation hub
Active, moving, skyscrapering
The Windy City

The skyscraper city of the world
Italian Beef Maker, Magnets of the changing industry
the ideal location on an inland lake
Musical, rebuilding, changing,
The City with the most down to earth people.

Here's a poem I wrote many... many moons ago for a class:

City of Big dreams
City of Big disappointments
City of tensions
City of diversity
City of contrasts
City of injustice
City of liberalism
City that took on the world
Home to dreams
Homes to nightmares
City of Big Shoulders

Hmm. I think I've grown a bit as a writer since then. ;)

Here's one of my favorite Sandburg poems:

Come you, cartoonists,
Hang on a strap with me here
At seven o'clock in the morning
On a Halsted Street Car.

Take your pencils
And draw these faces.

Try with your pencils for these crooked faces,
That pig-sticker in one corner-his mouth-
That overall factory girl-her loose cheeks.

Find for your pencils
A way to mark your memory
Of tired empty faced.

After their night's sleep,
In the moist dawn
And cool daybreak,
Tired of Wishes
Empty of Dreams.

-Carl Sandburg,
"Halsted Street Car"

I'm not sure why I liked it. It kinda paints the ol' place in a bad light...

I have always like this oldie:

Aliotta, Haynes, and Jeremiah - Lake Shore Drive
There’s a road I’d like to tell you about, lives in my home town
Lake Shore Drive the road is called and it’ll take you up or down
From rags on up to riches fifteen minutes you can fly
Pretty blue lights along the way, help you right on by
And the blue lights shining with a heavenly grace, help you right on by

And there ain’t no road just like it
Anywhere I found
Running south on Lake Shore Drive heading into town
Just slippin’ on by on LSD, Friday night trouble bound

And it starts up north from Hollywood, water on the driving side
Concrete mountains rearing up, throwing shadows just about five
Sometimes you can smell the green if your mind is feeling fine
There ain’t no finer place to be, than running Lake Shore Drive
And there’s no peace of mind, or place you see, than riding on Lake Shore Drive

And there ain’t no road just like it
Anywhere I found
Running south on Lake Shore drive heading into town
Just slicking on by on LSD, Friday night trouble bound

And it’s Friday night and you’re looking clean
To early to start the rounds
A ten minute ride from the Gold Coast back make sure you’re pleasure bound
And it’s four o’clock in the morning and all of the people have gone away
Just you and your mind and Lake Shore Drive, tomorrow is another day
And the sunshine’s fine in the morning time, tomorrow is another day

And there ain’t no road just like it
Anywhere I found
Running south on Lake Shore drive heading into town
Just snaking on by on LSD, Friday night trouble bound
