Dodoma has huge potential, right now it reminds me of Las Vegas before the casino strips and California before Hollywood and Silicon Valley. Very dry, hot, arid, but lots of sun and blue skies. Lots of empty spaces and unused land. It's potential is boundless.

The government needs to be very ambitious with the urban planning of this city. Right now people only really recognise Dar Es Salaam as a major city within the country and why not, there is so much to do there. It's near Zanzibar, there are lots of beaches and most things you can find in any developed country you can find there.

Dodoma should focus on services and things that you cannot get in Dar and it should position itself as a centre of arts and culture. With the right framework and events in place it will bring people to Dodoma and importantly offer something distinct that will make people want to go there instead of or as well as places like Dar, Arusha or Zanzibar. Big events, film festivals, fashion shows, concerts should be brought to the city.

They are about to start building the new stadium there and I hear that a 30,000 capacity arena will also be built making the city perfect for big events.

Here is my list of things that the city needs to carve out it's own image distinct from other Tanzanian cities and make it the best city in the country and even East Africa.

1. Good urban planning - Lots of parks, cycling lanes, green spaces, footpaths and places for people to walk
2. A Grand Dodoma Mall - So my idea behind this is to reduce the number of malls in the city but only have very few quality malls and especially have one world class, quality mall on par with what you'll find in any major city globally. Many African cities have dozens and dozens of malls but not a single mall of international quality just reduce the number of licences given for malls unless it meets a very good standard. Quality over quantity.
3. A large world class museum (Museum of Africa) - If done right it would attract a large number of people especially from the diaspora. But this would be the type of interesting project that you wouldn't get in Dar.
4. A Dodoma Exhibition Centre - A modern venue for events, exhibitions and expositions
5. A Cultural Centre - A centre for cultural events and activity's, presidential ceremonies. This would also be useful to showcase all of the cultures within East Africa, invite tribal groups to showcase their dances through shows and events. We don't do this enough in our culture
6. Good Housing - The Iyumbu Housing project is what the city needs. But it needs more housing projects like this and better neighbourhoods for people to live in
7. A local Dodoma rail system - In any world class city you should be able to travel to all corners of the city in a reasonable time
8. A Dodoma BRT bus system - I think this is planned but it can't come fast enough
9. Cycling lanes
Events
1. A Dodoma Film Festival - Film festivals are a quick win, they get lots of attention and you can utilise several venues for this type of event.
2. An International Technology Expo - Another great way to attract an international audience
3. Fashion shows and fashion weeks - Perhaps a Tanzania Fashion Week or Africa Fashion Week, again it puts the city in a modern light and appeals to an international audience

Dodoma is actually very well planned, I think this regime does not want to repeat the same mistake they did to Dar es Salaam.

Dodoma is envisioned to have a light rail system, new housing estates to be built and the infrastructure is good too considering it's just 5 years since the government has moved there. The new Government City at Mtumba is now tarmacked while the new Ring road is being constructed.

What remains is promoting private property investment to drive away the old tembes in the city and give more space to the ever-increasing number of civil servants. I think Dodoma especially the central part needs to have a plan to have all buildings to be above 4 storeys by let's say year 2030.

Also, Dodoma currently does not have many amusements, compared to Dar which is connected to National parks, beaches, and of course Zanzibar, Dodoma is far away from major attractions, so as you suggested Dodoma needs a lot of social events.

In regards to what your saying about new buildings and what I forgot to mention in my initial post was how important it is for the city to have a 'building code' Building code - Wikipedia Building code is where a local/city authority stipulates that buildings and urban planning meet a certain standard this could be in relation to design, parts or even consistency. I really don't think there's a single city in Africa that has an effective building code.

The other type of amenity the city needs that you don't get in Dar is a Botanical Gardens, these type of things I've suggested you can't find anywhere in East Africa or even sub sahara africa. I hope that someone from the government is reading this forum and taking note of my ideas for Dodoma.
