Burma plans Phuket resort flights

A Burmese airline is launching twice-weekly flights between Rangoon and the Thai resort island of Phuket.

A spokeswoman for the airline told the Myanmar Times the service will begin in early December on Mondays and Fridays.

Each flight will accommodate around 100 passengers.

Air Bagan also announced plans to increase the number of flights on its existing route from Rangoon to the northern Thai town of Chiang Mai.

MAI to launch Bangkok-Singapore flight in October
YANGON, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Airways International (MAI) run by the private sector will launch daily flights between Bangkok and Singapore from the end of this month, sources with the airline said on Saturday.

It will be another air route between Bangkok and Singapore, operated by the airline, using an Airbus-type aircraft, from Oct. 31 to March 26, the sources said adding that the tickets will be sold through authorized agents.

MAI flights already linked Yangon with Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Gaya in India and the airline plans to start services to China's Guangzhou at the end of November.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam Airlines will launch direct flight service between Ho Chi Minh and Yangon on Nov. 15 in addition to Hanoi-Yangon flight to enhance trade between the two countries.

The Myanmar Airways (MA), which is a domestic airline, is planning to buy three airbuses from China to substitute with the existing F-32 type aircrafts in use, sources with the aviation authority said.

There are 13 foreign airlines flying Yangon which comprise Air China, China Southern Airline, Thai Airways International, Indian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Silk Air, Malaysian Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Mandarin, Jetstar Asia, Phuket Airline, Thai Air Asia and Vietnam Airlines.

New airline prepares for November launch
By Zaw Win Than
October 25 - 31, 2010
SPURRED by the prospect of rising tourist numbers after the November 7 election, a new private domestic airline with mystery investors is set to begin flights next month.

Asian Wings Airways will begin flying to a range of local destinations from mid-November, U Maung Maung Shwe Moe, the company’s general manager, said last week.

“The tourist season is just beginning, so it’s the right time to establish a new airline. We expect a good response from passengers,” he said. “For the moment, our airline is under development and we are awaiting permission to operate.”

The airline will use two ATR 72-500 aircraft that can accommodate about 70 passengers, and will fly regular scheduled flights to Nyaung Oo, Mandalay, Heho, Thandwe and Sittwe and less frequent flights to Tachileik, Lashio, Homalin, Myitkyina, as well as southern destinations such as Dawei, Kawthoung and Myeik.

“Arrival numbers have been increasing. Most tourists visiting Myanmar come via Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Kunming,” he said.

U Maung Maung Shwe Moe denied reports that the new airline was connected to Htoo Trading, which owns Air Bagan, and Yangon-based ticketing agency Sun Far Travel.

However, he refused to say who was behind the new airline.

“I just would like to say that Asian Wings is a privately owned company established in the middle of this year. We are an independent company and we don’t have any affiliation with any of the other airlines or any travel company,” he said.

“As our airline is under development, we are not ready to give details about who our shareholders are. We will provide all the details about airline when we launch officially.”

He said, however, that the airline would get support from other domestic airlines. “We have put a proposal to Myanma Airways to hire their experienced pilots. We will also receive different support from other airlines,” he said.

Another new domestic airline, Air Kanbawza, owned by Kanbawza Bank, is also expected to start services before the end of the year, using five 100-seat Canadian-made MA-60 planes and ATR-72s. Myanmar has four main domestic passenger airlines: Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways, Air Bagan and state-run Myanma Airways.

Myanmar airline to operate Yangon-Guangzhou flight service
Source: Xinhua [13:07 July 22 2010] Comments The Myanmar Airway International ( MAI) is planning to operate a new route between Yangon and Guangzhou by October this year in a bid to enhance the country's tourism industry, sources with the aviation authority said on Thursday.
For the purpose, the airline is going to add a new airplane -- Airbus A-320, the sources said.
The MAI will become another airline flying between the two destinations after China Southern Airlines.
MAI was once a joint venture set up by the state-run Myanmar Airways and a Singapore-based company in 1993 for sole international service flights covering three scheduled flight destinations -- Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
In 2007, the Region Air of Hong Kong took over the stake from the Singapore's with 49 percent held by it, while the remainder 51 percent possessed by the state-run Myanmar Airways.
In May this year, a giant Myanmar private company group, Kanbawza, took over the MAI for continuous operation under the government's privatization plan.
The Kanbawza bought up 80 percent stake of the airline with the remainder continued to be held by the government.
MAI is currently operating regular flight services to four destinations -- Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Gaya.

Private Myanmar domestic airline forced to suspend operations next week
25 November 2010

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - An official of one of Myanmar's two privately owned domestic airlines says it has been denied a renewal of its operating license, forcing it to suspend operations next week in a move possibly related to the country's complicated ethnic politics.

A Yangon Airways official said Thursday that the Department of Civil Aviation has informed the company that its operating permit has been temporarily suspended, without giving a reason. He asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The airline's owner, Aik Hauk, is a prominent member of the ethnic Wa minority. Like several other ethnic groups, the Wa have irritated the government by not yet bowing to its demand that they integrate their own militias into the government's Border Guard Force.

Myanmar airline replaces old aircrafts for safe flight
YANGON, Dec. 13 (PNA/Xinhua) -- Myanmar's state-owned domestic airline -- Myanmar Airways (MA) has replaced Fokker-27, one of its old-aged aircrafts, with airbus MA-60 starting this month as part of its program of upgrading its flight services, local media reported Monday.

The MA-60 aircraft was bought from China, said the Weekly Eleven News, adding that the move was made under an arrangement of renewing its aircrafts to ensure safe flight.

Since 1948, the airline had used such aircrafts for domestic flight services as Gyophyu, Vicount, Otta, F-27, F-28, ATR-42 and ATR-72.

According to other reports which quoted the aviation authority, the MA will buy three more MA-60 airbuses from China.

Myanmar also has an international airline run by the private sector, namely Myanmar Airways International (MAI).

MAI was once a joint venture set up by the state-run Myanmar Airways and a Singapore-based company in 1993 for sole international service flights covering three scheduled flight destinations -- Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

In 2007, the Region Air of Hong Kong took over the stake from Singapore with 49 percent held by it, while the remainder 51 percent possessed by the state-run Myanmar Airways.

In May this year, a giant Myanmar private company group, Kanbawza, took over the MAI for continuous operation under the government's privatization plan.

The Kanbawza bought up 80 percent stake of the airline with the remainder continued to be held by the government.

Airports of Myanmar

In the next four posts comes a photographic update of four mayor airports of Myanmar. The photos were taken November/December, 2010 and cover the airports of Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, and Heho.
1) Yangon airport:

Impression: new and spacious, with modern and spacious interiour, many shops. Seems not to be used up to its limits but does not look empty either. Very good overall apperance and feeling.

2) Mandalay airport:

Mostly empty airport, too big for the few flights that are being operated from here. Modern displays are installed but not used. One computer screen was switched on, all others were dead. The screen showed a computer hung in boot sequence, with old technology: 100MHz processor, 8MB memory, 3,5 Floppy drive. The emptiness of the airport causes an uncomfortable feeling, at least at the time when I was there which was at off-peak hours - however, everything is handled effectively and easily.

3) Bagan airport:

Small but very effective. No need for complicated technology. Departures are signalled by people upholding cards with flight numbers and shouting. All processes for arrival and departure are quick and easily handled and give a nice feeling of confidence. Due to its small size it seems quite heavily used and full of travellers. Overall a very effective and nice small airport.

4) Heho airport:

The smallest airport that I have visited. Arrival and departure "halls" are basically one room, separated by a glass wall. Due to its small size it is full of travellers and gives the impression of being too small (at least at peak times), however, even at peak times I experienced a very quick and effective handling of all processes. No need for technology. Departures are signalled by upheld cards (which is a perfect thing and I wish more airports would do it) and give a good feeling of confidence.
