The Centre has approved the Karnataka Government’s ₹3,000-crore proposal to convert the Bangalore-Mysore road into a six-lane national highway.

“Of the ₹3,000 crore, ₹1100 crore is reserved for land acquisition, ₹1,600 for construction and ₹300 crore for shifting utilities,” he added.

The 123-km six-lane highway includes service roads. The project is being taken up under the design, build, finance, operate, transfer (DBFOT) model

As part of the project, along with lane expansion work, flyovers will be built at Bidadi and Srirangapatna, and bypass roads at Ramanagar, Channapatna and Mandya towns.

Bengaluru-Mysuru 6 Lane Work to Begin by August

Karnataka PWD minister Dr HC Mahadevappa said work on upgrading existing Bengaluru-Mysuru road to six lanes will begin by August 2016.

Replying to BJP MLC V Somanna who raised question on upgrading state highways to national highways, minister said the state had 4468 kms national highway prior to 2013 when Congress came to power in the state. ``After Congress came to power, 1883 SH were upgraded to NH. Now central government has approved to upgrade 2853 kms SH to NH. After detailed project report, tender notification will be issued and work will start in next two to three months. With this Karnataka will have 9204kms NH which will be one among highest in Indian states,'' he said.

Stressing on Bengaluru-Mysuru six lane work, it needs Rs 3000 crore and RS 2400 crore for land acquisition. Central government will provide financial assistance. "by May or June, foundation will be laid by CM and union surface transport minister. We will call tender and work will by August. Also work for upgrading Bengaluru to Kanakapura to four lane which is 37kms will also start during same time.''

BJP MLC Ashwathnarayana asked about upgrading national highways uniformly if the road pass two or more states. Some roads are good toll Karnataka border and after that neighbouring state roads becomes single lane. It will take more time to travel and accidents increase. PWD minister assured that he will take it up with the Centre.

Widening of B'luru-Mysuru road from August-end, says Minister

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister H C Mahadevappa on Wednesday said that the project to widen the Bengaluru-Mysuru national highway will be taken up by the end of August.

Speaking to reporters, he said the tendering process is likely to be completed by May, and the land acquisition is underway. About 45 % of total land required for the project, which envisages upgrading the highway into a six-lane road, has been already acquired.

By June end

The land acquisition process is expected to be completed by June, he added.Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari has agreed to inaugurate the project work.

He will be invited soon after the completion of the land acquisition process. The land acquisition is estimated to cost Rs 2,400 crore, while the estimated cost of the road work is Rs 3,700 crore, Mahadevappa said.

Machines for better roads

The minister said the PWD has procured two hi-tech machines – Falling Weight Deflectometer and Road Condition Data Collector – to ensure quality road works in the state. The machines have been procured at the cost of Rs 5 crore and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has given financial assistance for this purpose, he said.

Falling Weight Deflectometer is used for evaluating the physical properties of roads and pavements. Road Condition Data Collector machine can assess the quality of completed road projects. They are mounted with computerised quality rating key board and a camera, he explained.

Upgradation Work of Bengaluru-Mysuru Road From August

BENGALURU: The much-awaited upgradation work of four-lane busy Bengaluru-Mysuru highway into six-lanes, will begin by the end of August. Heavy traffic on this road is causing severe inconvenience to the motorists, besides stretching the travel time by more than one hour.

Public Works Department Minister H C Mahadevappa on Wednesday told reporters that the tender process would be over by May or June and Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari would kick-start the upgradation work in August.

According to the plan, the 113km-long road will be upgraded to six lanes with service roads on either side of the road. Once the project gets completed, the travel time is likely to be reduced by almost one hour. “We have already acquired 30-40 per cent of the land required for the project and the acquisition process for the remaining lands will be done quickly so that it can be completed in the next one or two months,” Mahadevappa added.

To a question, he said Rs 2,400 crore is required for the land acquisition and Rs 3,700 crore for road construction. He added that Gadkari had responded positively to the state’s demand for upgrading around 4,000 km of roads into national highways. “This apart, Gadkari has also promised to provide financial assistance to build 30 overbridges at railway crossings on national highways in the state. He has asked us to submit a detailed report,” he added.

The department has procured equipment which can assess the condition of roads and distress parameters like rutting, ravelling, potholes etc.

“The data provided by these machines can be utilised for scientific planning and maintenance of roads across the state,” Mahadevappa said.

Siddaramaiah hopeful of six-lane stretch by 2018

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said the State government wanted to see the Bengaluru-Mysuru National Highway become a six-lane carriageway by 2018.

“Once the highway becomes a six-lane road, the travel time between Bengaluru and Mysuru will come down by one-and-a-half hours,” the Chief Minister said, after inaugurating the 34.4-km long Outer Ring Road (ORR) that was built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The total length of the road is 42 km but inauguration of the 7.5-km long road had been done a few years ago.

The work on the completion of the road had been delayed for various reasons escalating the project cost.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the land acquisition for the widening of Bengaluru-Mysuru National Highway had commenced.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that the doubling of the railway track between Bengaluru and Mysuru was nearing completion barring a stretch at Srirangapatna.

These projects will also ease the journey time between the two cities, he added. Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the State government had also emphasised developing roads following a spurt in the vehicle population.

“I wish Mysuru grows in a planned way because the city has a rich history and is known for its palaces and beauty. I favour planned development of the city,” he said.

Drive on Mysuru-Bengaluru road on weekends is now a nightmare

ONCE, driving the 140 km distance between Mysuru and Bengaluru was a pleasure, past stretches of paddy and sugarcane fields that took two-and-a-half hours. But it has turned out to be a bane during weekends with bumper-to-bumper traffic, taking five long hours.

Dasara, vacations and government holidays make driving a nightmare as most stretches of the highway are choked near Mandya, Maddur, Bidadi and Kengeri that may increase travel by two hours or more.

As the number of IT industries and MNCs increased, so have the techies and weekend crowd to Mysuru that has many tourists spots like Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, Bandipur-Nagarhole, B R Hills, Srirangapatna, Nanjangud and Brindavan Gardens.

Thousands of them explore coffee land Kogadu and pass Mysuru to reach Ooty, Gudalur or Masinagudi, with stopovers to visit Chamundhi hill, Zoo or other spots.

Peak hour traffic

The drive from Bengaluru is tedious on Saturdays as most people start early in the morning or after lunch to settle down by evening. A survey has shown that many start from Mysuru to Bengaluru after 3 pm and end up in bumper to bumper traffic that takes around five hours. Travel would not be tedious if they start before 1 pm, said Jagadeesh, a driver.

Absence of bypasses

The failure of the authorities to develop bypass roads to avoid entering fast growing towns like Ramanagaram, Channapatna, Maddur, Mandya and Srirangapatna results in vehicles getting stranded for 15 to 25 minutes at junctions on the highway.

Alternative roads

People could use alternative roads to reach Bengaluru via Bannur, Malavalli - Kanapura that would cut down pressure on the National Highway.

People from Nagamangala- K R Pet in Mandya district can use the NH from Bellur Cross - Kunigal- Tumakuru to reach Bengaluru.

PWD superintending engineer Sathyanarayana said they have also recommended to notify Mysuru - Malavalli road as a National Highway that would link H D Kote - Bavali - Mananthawadi in Kerala, which would improve infrastructure and roads.

Traffic beyond capacity

The survey conducted by PWD revealed that there are 55,000 to 58,000 passenger car units (PCU) near Bidadi, 48,000 between Ramanagaram- Chanapatna, 47,000 near Mandya and over 59,000 PCUs near Srirangapatna. NH 275 that has an average of 30,000 vehicles on weekdays stretches to more than 75,000 on weekends and even more during Dasara and extended weekends clubbed with government holidays. PWD AEE Jalwendrakumar said traffic on this NH is beyond its carrying capacity

The Bengaluru-Mysuru road is going from bad to worse as craters have surfaced across the stretch making driving there a nightmarish experience. Till date, Bengaluru-Mysuru road was the only state government-developed road that rivalled roads developed by private operators and national highways due to its excellent maintenance.


Despite the many curves and high traffic density of the stretch, the quality of the road was good. However, many potholes have surfaced on the the 140-km stretch, especially the Mysuru to Bengaluru road, lately.
"It is just the beginning of monsoon and if the roads can go bad now, imagine how bad it will be in the coming days. Secondly, the road is soon to be upgraded as a six-lane one. Generally, it is seen that during upgradation process, existing road maintenance is not up to the mark. One can only wonder how long the road can continue to remain in this conditon," said Sandeep B, a regular commuter between the two cities.

Speeding motorists tend to notice the craters only at the last minute; by the time they negotiate the curve, it is, more often than not, too late.

"On a daily basis, I have seen many accidents due to these craters," said Naveen K, a regular commuter.

Meanwhile, police sources said they get often complaints of accidents during the night time as poor visibility and bad road stretch plays spoilsport.

With no barriers, Mysuru-Bengaluru highway turns unsafe

The expandable barricades that had replaced the bumpy speed humps on the Mysuru-Bengaluru highway (National Highway 275) are now in a pathetic condition and out of shape, all thanks to frequent accidents. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Mandya police who introduced them too seem to have abandoned them.

The expandable or collapsible barricades were put up at vulnerable junctions on the Mysuru-Bengaluru highway to avoid accidents and ease the inconvenience caused by speed humps. Prior to putting up expandable barricades, Mandya police had identified 69 humps on the 70-km stretch between Srirangapatna taluk and Maddur taluk.

Mandya police put up these barricades with reflective tapes in a zig-zag manner to prevent accidents. The barricades were put up at key accident zones and villages. Mandya SP Bhushan G Borase had even claimed that accidents had dipped on the Mysuru-Bengaluru highway after the collapsible barricades were placed.

ಕೆಂಗೇರಿ ಬಳಿಯ ನೈಸ್* ರಸ್ತೆಯ ಅಂಚಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವಿಶ್ವ ಒಕ್ಕಲಿಗರ ಮಠದಿಂದ ಆರಂಭವಾಗಿ ಮೈಸೂರು ವರ್ತುಲ ರಸ್ತೆಯ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಕ್ತಾಯವಾಗುವ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಗಳಿವೆ.

ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ ಮಾನದಂಡದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ 40 ಕಿ.ಮೀಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ರೆಸ್ಟೊರೆಂಟ್*, ಡೀಸೆಲ್* ಬಂಕ್*, ಶೌಚಾಲಯ, ವಾಹನ ನಿಲುಗಡೆ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಇರಬೇಕು. ಈ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 55 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ಒಳಗೆ ಎಡ ಹಾಗೂ ಬಲ ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಅವಕಾಶ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈಗಿರುವ ರೆಸ್ಟೊರೆಂಟ್*ಗಳಿಗೆ ಟೋಲ್* ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿಯ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ರಸ್ತೆ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ ನೈಸ್* ಕಂಪೆನಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಆಕ್ಷೇಪವನ್ನು ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸರ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಮೈಸೂರು ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 60 ಸಾವಿರ ವಾಹನ ಓಡಾಡುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ ನೈಸ್* ಕಂಪೆನಿಯು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು– ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ರಸ್ತೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರೂ ಸಹ ನಷ್ಟ ಸಂಭವಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಲೋಕೋಪಯೋಗಿ ಇಲಾಖೆ ವಾದ ಮಂಡಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಈ ವಾದವನ್ನು ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಪುರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಹಸಿರು ನಿಶಾನೆ ತೋರಿಸಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಮೂಲಗಳು ತಿಳಿಸಿವೆ.

ಯೋಜನೆಯ ವಿಶೇಷಗಳು
* ವಿಶ್ವ ಒಕ್ಕಲಿಗರ ಆಶ್ರಮದಿಂದ ಕುಂಬಳಗೋಡು ಹಾಗೂ ಮದ್ದೂರು ಬಳಿ ಎತ್ತರಿಸಿದ ಮಾರ್ಗ. 30 ಮೀಟರ್*ಗೆ ಒಂದರ ಬದಲು 65 ಮೀಟರ್*ಗೆ ಒಂದರಂತೆ ಪಿಲ್ಲರ್*ಗಳು.
