Ha ha.. Your Shantinikatani bangla is going excellent Manbil. You know, my mother side is actually from Dhaka. I speak nice East Bengali too.. :lol:

Regarding Omega, I think most of them moved there. I know one or two of them. They are already working there.

Good for you! You can try Bangal-type language with me anytime. Actually Bhanu's language is pretty similar to mine....

Good deal -- it'll be interesting because Kolkata is getting so spread out nowadays that bandhs and hartals in the core city won't effect day-to-day business in these Newtown areas where residences are close by and hopefully not across town. That's exactly how it should be.

^^Tech sector was not affected much by bandhs until recently. Today the employers are better prepared to face situations by providing overnight stay houses, early drop in/drop off etc so as not to clash with the bandh timings and to ensure safety of their employees. It is a learning for the administration of the companies as to how to effectively manage the situations so as to ensure BAU especially for the BPO sector

I am a BaGh (Bangal + Ghoti) as well - maybe a GhBa in the patriarcal society sense!

Literally - a lazy comment - Saraf and Arijeet have been contributing in this thread and related ones so nicely that I have decided to stop contributing and have gone back to my lovely olddays where i can read and enjoy and never need to type (and Sun is anyway contributing as always).

Looks like Sun, Saraf, Fred & myself we all have a part Bangal connection.
Ofcourse, having never really lived in WB, I may not be in a position to differentiate the two dialects much.

Yeah it was a sad thing about the refugees in 1947 -- it is heart-breaking to leave everything behind and start from scratch...

From the Eastern side a lot of the people in Noakhali and Comilla left. Comilla was the capital of the Tripura kings and they had to move across to Agartala. S.D. Burman was a famous patriarch from that family. Of course the Bangal names are too many.

Amartya Sen, Hrittik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen are just some famous Bangal names that come to mind now.

One day all this 'vedaved' will end and we will be able to move freely across the borders that separate us.

Acharya Jagadish Chandra Basu, Acharya P.C.Ray, Upendrakishore Roychowdhury(grandfather of Satyajit Ray), Joyti Basu, Prafulla Ghosh, Khudiram Basu, Masterda Surjya Sen, Budhadeb Bhattacharjee, Suchitra Sen, Supriya Chowdhury, Bhanu, Rabi and many more I don't recall readily.

Thumbs up to the spirit of the community!

All I meant was that I would still contribute as and when I find something valuable, just that people are doing a great job in contributing and so I am safely and lazily enjoying every bit of it.

To come back to the "real topic", yes, we are seeing some great development in Kolkata (and India), and the impression you get from them (for example, pages like http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=436029&page=95) is mind-boggling. We just need to keep capturing as they grow.

A line of thought and nothing concrete - as the SSC community, do we see any way to really contribute something of value to our cities? The fact that we capture the growth and developments is great, but it is majorly of descriptive nature. Is there a way to take it a step forward and have some value that is generative? Even an SSC tutorial on pollution control or implementation of civic sense, for example?
