The trams form the public transport network in the city, this is at Shokakuji-shita stop, the final stop of the lines 1 & 5. The small trams run in a very high frequency, if the tram is full you just wait for the next one.

Nakanochaya, a tea house / museum / Japanese garden, a small attraction that won't see to much visitors. I still don't exactly know where this museum was dedicated to, probably some illustrator, but not someone really historical. The small garden and the tea was nice.

Gunkanjima - Battleship Island

Hashima Island is one of the internationally known sight around Nagasaki. This small island was an active coal mine from 1890 until 1974. The miners not just worked on the island but also lived there with their families in a small but very dense city. As the island is so small it was fully build up with industrial buildings, apartment blocks, schools, shops and other regular buildings you will find in a city. The population peaked at 5,259, that was a density of 83,500 people per km².

After the mine closed in 1974 the island was abandoned, the industrial buildings were demolished but the residential area was not and turned into a ghost town fully exposed to the elements. The shape of the island and the buildings give it the look of a large battleship when you it from a short distance, that's why it is usually called Gunkanjima = Battleship Island.

The Island was opened for organized tourist tours in 2009. You take a boat from Nagasaki, first you go around the Island before you land on it for a short walk. Sadly the tour doesn't take you right into the area with the abandoned buildings, but that's only logical as it would be far to dangerous to enter with the poor state after years of neglect.

86. When the mine was active there was no green on the island, all the trees and greenery that is now on the island was brought by the seeds in bird droppings.
