THE new headquarters of the Ministry of Finance is being built next to the Fiscus Building and will cost about N$153 million. The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Iben Nashandi, said the site was handed over to a Chinese construction company in October 2010 and the building is expected to be completed by December 2013.

"We currently have a space problem to accommodate all staff members. They are scattered all over Windhoek and this hampers the smooth functioning of the ministry. At times we don't even have an open boardroom to meet with clients or with some staff members. This new 12-storey building will accommodate inter alia the management team of the ministry, including the offices of the minister, her deputy as well as the permanent secretary and the deputy," Nashandi told The Namibian.

The headquarters will also eliminate the payment of rent to private owners and according to Nashandi "the much-needed revenue currently being paid to private entities can then be used for other pressing government needs".

During the 2010/2011 financial year N$23,6 million was set aside for the project, while N$42,9 million will be used in the next book year. The last amount of N$5,6 million will be paid out in the 2014/2015 financial year.

"We want to make sure that the staff members are working in a conducive environment which will again promote their efficiency, effectiveness and production," said Nashandi.

Once the new building is completed the Finance Ministry will then consist of the Fiscus Building, Inland Revenue Building and the new headquarters.
