The entire roof -with exception of a small section above the main stand- has been removed.

Currently, AZ and the municipality of Alkmaar are in disagreement whether the 15 December match against Ajax could take place in Alkmaar, including attendees. Alkmaar has stated that in any case it could take place without fans. A decision is expected to be taken within the next coming days.

AZ will definitively return to the AFAS Stadion to play -crowd included- against Ajax next Saturday 15 December.

The two top floodlights have been installed on a temporary construction. There is hear-say about the floodlights being replaced by LED-lights.

AZ has already filed for a construction permit to build the new roof.

Hopefully they will consider extending parts of the bowl upwards, while they have the chance. The highest part of the tier (where the roof has collapsed)has a 32nd row, whereas the sections behind the goals only have a 25nd upper row.
Aligning the entire tier to the 32nd row would add another 2,000 seats. Currently, the leg trusses supporting the former roof structure are directly attached to the top row, disallowing adding extra rows.

This technique has always been a possibility, as can be seen below from a preliminary study for a 40k extension. Yes, this was a plan from 2007 to go from 17k to 40k.

Another rumour is that the new stadium roof will get new foundations, further removed from the stadium. This might allow the aforementioned upwards expansion. In addition, this would allow for a standardised roof, as was planned for future expansions. The now dismantled roof structure was tailor-made, going up and down and extending and retracting, completely following the parabolic form of the stands. This was purely a case of aesthetics.

AZ was already planning to expand the stadium to about 20/21k by covering the moat. Reaching 22/23k however, would materialise the club’s very first expansion plans from back in 2005/2006 when the stadium was still under construction.

An artist impression from AZ’s new year’s kickoff yesterday.

This is not the final design. This picture was taken regardless of AZ’s request to the media not to spread it around. At least it explains why the quality is crappy, aside from the picture having been cropped.

The idea would be to:

-make a roof on one level with a transparant part closest to the pitch, extending further than the former roof.
-a mega truss will be added to carry the roof over the main stand
-close the moat with extra seats
-create a concourse around the stadium

As for the planning:

- Summer 2020/phase I: the aim is to install the new roof and -if local government allows it- to increase capacity by adding extra rows on top the goal stands
- Summer 2021/phase II: would include extending the main stand and the fanatics stand (on the left side of the picture) towards the pitch
- Date unknown/phase III: has not been financed yet, but would include extending the the remaining stands towards the field

Depending on what will be allowed and feasible, capacity could go up with 2,500 to 5,000 seats

The final report by Royal HaskoningDHV was presented on thursday.

1. The welds of the joints were applied badly
2. The design of roof elements was flawed, and as a consequence the structure resisted to less pressure as foreseen.
3. A novelty is that the specific beam which collapsed first, resulting in a domino effect, was already damaged in a more severe storm. The impression is that this previous storm occurred back in January 2007.

SBV Excelsior, the smallest of the three professional clubs in Rotterdam, has presented redevelopment plans for their aim to secure a spot in the top league. Their stadium should grow from 4,5 to 6,5k and would be accommodating housing as well.

Woudestein, as the stadium is still called by most, is situated on the old Woudestein estate. Amongst its neighbours are an arboretum and the campus of Erasmus University.

Excelsior, who allowed Robin van Persie to make his first steps on the academy grounds, have achieved to play in the Eredivisie in 10/20 seasons this century. They did this regardless of playing in one of the smallest (all seater) stadiums in dutch professional football. Until a few years ago, no more than 3,5k people could see clubs like Feyenoord and Ajax pay a visit to the neighbourhood of Kralingen.

No talks about the club. Nice stadium with the rows on pitch level.
But it shows also a lack of entrances and I think health and safety inspectors will have an opinion about that.

Or is that just me?

As far as I know if the stands are to be extended towards the pitch, new entrances will be created in the stands. The most recent artist impression shows no signs of additional entrances, but the earlier one from January clearly shows extended stands and entrances mid-stand.

Does the rich Dutch state also invest in stadiums like the French one for instance? Or are you following the British model?

Not sure if the Netherlands privately is so strong or most like they would not be willing to invest in sports. Because otherwise much of the Dutch fortune is concentrated in the hands of only some Dutch citizens.

Also it must be mentioned your country only has 17 million. I am just wondering how it stays generally so far.
