Rutgers Construction Update, New Brunswick

New academic buildings

With new Honors College on right

New Hillel Building

From the side, with new dorms in background

Just the new dorms:

Non-Rutgers: New apartments. This was held up by neighbors for over a year due to size (too big! Out of character!)

Bonus: Cyclists confused by new bicycle lane

Lets see what is happening in Metuchen.

They have a very cute downtown, but its only like 2 blocks long

The surrounding area has been full of surface parking lots accompanied with ugly utility poles and sidewalks that look they were all installed in 1962 and then never touched again.

Until now.

This is 99% done (they were working on the elevators)

Unsure if this old thing is staying

There is a nice path from the new garage and development to the train station

Inside the garage

Other side of the garage

Other buildings will wrap the garage

From the top floor of the garage

Im a big fan of TOD but YIKES, these apartments are close to the NEC. The express trains come by here very first.

Whats worse is that express trains on the outer tracks have to lay on their horns. An Amtrak went by and made me JUMP. I really hope theyre going with concert-venue style sound insulation...

Youll see how close it is later on^

The plaza + retail

Maybe a sky bridge is going in?

This wasnt the one that scared me

That last spot shouldnt exist, will be impossible to exit when this is full...

The train station

Downtown

Now we're on the ground

Parking here is cheap! Limit 72 hours, lol!

Pedestrian access needs work

Look how close!

Look how run down everything looks in this part of town

Future development?

A couple of blocks away, for reference

Turning around 180 degrees

And the other side of downtown is much prettier, but less dense

Not all single family though

Needs more sidewalks

I have New Brunswick stuff as well, will post in a few days

Onto New Brunswick.

Rutgers Academic Building

New Chabad House with Rutgers dorm in back

New dorms

I was hoping theyd have the street area done for graduation which is this weekend. Obama is coming you know.

Theyve only done a bit of new sidewalk

Non-Rutgers - Residential development a block away

From that new development you can see the Rutgers dorm

Thats it for now!

If nothing starts construction soon, there will be nothing to report come September.

Long overdue update!

We start with random infill. I stumbled across all these projects, I dont know anything about them. However, theyre all located just south of the Rutgers College Ave campus, and thus are aimed at students.

Most are incredibly ugly.

The fast pace Urbanization of New Brunswick is incredible. How many projects are under construction in NB?
Many small infill projects, but the one above is the only big private one under construction. The other big stuff is Rutgers.

However the Ferren Deck Plan is being discussed tonight:

And this 10 story, 36 unit building was recently approved downtown (96 Bayard Street)

Construction on Rutgers Douglas campus. The building is fine, the location is atrocious. Plopped right in the middle of a quad with no respect to the original design.
