New Leeds Airport

Ok, so there's been a lot of discussion on the boards recently about how LBA is very badly located, which hampers both the number of people using it and the local area due to congestion.

So what other options are there?

I'd like to suggest a completely new airport on an entirely new site, this site being northeast of Knottingley, with the runway running E-W from Burton Salmon to Birkin.

This site is ideal. It's right next to Ferrybridge and the M62/A1 interchange, as well as being only a few hundred yards away from both the Castleford-York and Leeds-Goole railway lines. It would be very easy to construct a through spur to allow trains from both lines, meaning easy access of local and intercity trains. This could be not only the airport, but a better version of East Leeds parkway-a transportation hub serving all of Yorkshire, as it would close but be an adequate replacement for Doncaster and Sheffield.

Thoughts?

Nice idea for a new airport but I used to live in the area you suggested and it will never happen there. The majority of the people moved there away from busy city life because they wanted the 'quiet country life' so they would protest heavily against any distruption to their little villages.

Can you not keep your fantasy threads to the Skybar?

Isn't that location in the Aire valley flood plain (or should that be flood plane)
Elvington, south-east of York, has a 3000 metre runway.

I think it's also an emergency landing strip for the Space Shuttle!
Notice it's called Leeds Bradford Airport, serving both populaces and therefore located near, to the north and inbetween both cities. Your suggestion puts it near Castleford, and seems a little plucked from the air. Has there even been any discussion on this?
No, this is pure fantasy. Unfortunately they didnt plan the best in the 60's. Still, LBA has a rather large core catchment are and is severely under served. Developments and expansion will come eventually.
It would be interesting to see a feasibility study done to compare the costs of putting in decent road/rail links to LBA and building a brand new airport somewhere where such links already exist.
The government will never allow another airport to be built in Yorkshire, there have been two new ones built in the last 13 years, one of which is a business park now (which should have neer happened) and the other is too far from major population centres to prove competative (Doncaster), so i think if anything then the Leeds City Region should be looking at road and rail links to LBA. If there was ever an orbital motorway (not sure how likely that would be) then i fully believe LBA would expand massively.

A new airport ? Not in our lifetimes comrades.
LBIA is doing quite well in its present position, so forget a new airport, and support the one we have got, because its here to stay and can grow to accomodate the flying needs of Yorkshire.
Keep LBIA but connect it (wih Maglev) with Manchester Airport and create The Pennines Airport. Would be the only way for the Roses to compete with the London airports.
If that were to happen, Leeds airport would be killed completely.
Maybe with HSR (when they eventually build it) we'll all be going from Birmingham International instead?
Love it or hate it LBA is here to stay and what it really needs it a decent road link, a rail link should be seen as a bonus.

Agreed.

It's crying out for a dual carriageway at least from a major motorway...

Never get built though, too many moaning residents who live round that area...

If developers build on the old Clarent site they should ask them to contribute to an airport link road and/or a new railway station. Locals might not complain so much if the construction of a new road involved cut and cover tunneling for the sensitive parts.
If the locals want quiet they shouldn't have bought a house near an airport. People need to be able to get to the airport whether the locals like it or not.
I agree; don't buy a house next to an airport then complain about the noise or expansion of it.

I bought a house on the flight path in Horsforth probably only a mile or so from the runway and have lived in Horsforth all my life. I can't say I've ever really heard too many people moan about the planes as we are used to them.

Infact, I'd probably go the other way and suggest alot of people would be pleased to see an improvement to the roads in the area as both the ring rd/a65 roundabout and Scotland lane are a joke in terms of main arteries from the area to the airport.
