Early history:

The following map shows the sites of the two projects being developed on West 57th Street by Extell Development.

155-157 W 57th, which is the subject of another thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=776476 ), is shown in red. Its companion tower, 225 W 57th, which is the subject of this thread, is shown in orange.

225 W 57th is a far larger site. Therefore, since 155-157 W 57th will exceed 330m, it is likely that 225 W 57th will be much larger.

It was said awhile back that the Girasole could rival the towers going up in Midtown. I believe 432 Park was specifically mentioned.
yeah they said it could reach over 1400 ft, and then they also said that 225 west 57th street would be the tallest reseidential in the city, so this one will be over 1400 ft i assume..maybe 1450? depending on what girasole comes out to be, i wouldn't mind girasole being the tallest, i really like it lol
^^ I think that at least one of these buildings will try to claim more titles than just tallest in the city. Besides, the numbers to beat of the tallest in the city, the tallest in the country and the tallest in the hemisphere aren't far from each other (432 Park = 1398 feet, Willis Tower = 1451 feet, CN Tower = 1500 feet)

CN tower is 1815 feet tall...and now don't try to tell us why you don't count the full height....

That's the reason why even antennas are counted to the full height. It's not a normal skyscraper/supertall.

As they proceed with the WTC 1 construction, I am kind of hoping that its antenna is NOT counted in the official height for two reasons: 1) that would be a cheap way to get to 1,700+ feet, but more importantly 2) because New York then quickly destroys the taboo of building something taller than WTC 1.

I would very much like to see 225 57th or GCT 42nd end up being unquestionably the tallest in the city (and country). The tallest building belongs in Midtown.

432 Park and Girasole are great too, but I do not think the design of 432 Park and the westside location of Girasole warrant being the tallest in the city.

It just never felt right to me to completely disqualify those buildings just because they have less floors. For me a building is the tallest only when no other habitable building is taller, whether that be a skyscraper or an observation tower and the CN Tower's roof is 1500 feet

When is this building expected to start rising?

Since Herzog and de Meuron are the architects of this one, i just hope this one won´t end up being a "box stacked on box type" supertall. I´d like to see a pyramide like shape, like the building they proposed for Paris, in very tall with a decent subtle twist here, clad in silverish blueish glass, with dark details and maybe a thin layer of white mesh-work (their olympia stadion like) wrapping around the tower, creating a dramatic landmark on this spot of the skyline. :)

A late 2013 or early 2014 start date seems reasonable given the expected completion dates given in the article below.

The CN Tower is primarily a communication tower, that's the main purpose, the reason it was built for, so, there is no such thing as "not counting the antenna height" because the whole thing is basically a huge antenna.

The Sears Tower is an office building, that's its primary purpose, they added some antennas to take advantage of its height, they are an accessory, so you may or may not count them as the full height. You being a "roof height crusader" certainly wont count them. But in the case of a tower like the CN tower, you just can't take off the antenna, since, as I said earlier, the whole tower is the antenna, So, the CN Tower is 1815ft / 553 meters tall.

I think observation towers should have their entirety counted. No exceptions.

But this is a bit off topic.

Something like that, ja ;)
I wish we get something like Maha Nakhon in Bangkok there.

That Maha Nakhon tower blends in very well. Rem Koolhaas should do such a project in Manhattan.

Isn't 56 Leonard designed by the same guy?

nope it's Herzog & de Meuron.
I rode by in a cab on 23 Oct. and observed that the new Morton Williams store at 140 W 57th already has some food on the shelves. We're getting closer!

Morton Williams closed on 25 Oct 2012! Bring on the wrecking ball, and let's see a 400m tower rise!

:banana::banana::banana: PARTY :)

Great news, i expect a very very very very grand tower. I hope it will really be a Herzog & de Meuron , unlike it´s cousin One57, which is a fake (i can´t spell the name of that french architect) :D
