Times Square’s Hard Rock Hotel Gets Ready to Rise at 159 West 48th Street

Excavation is nearly finished, with a small section on the eastern end of the property remaining. The foundation walls on the northern side are about halfway complete, with scaffolding and equipment arranged around the concrete walls in multiple sections. Work on the core and lower levels of the building have not yet begun, but should start by spring.

Great. So what are the other projects in this view?
I believe they are both hotels. The one with the crane will be less than 30 floors so it's not really a blip on our radar. I think the dirt lot will be a highrise, but there hasn't been much movement or news so I dont think there's a thread in this section.

Construction is wrapping up on the Hard Rock Hotel, a 36-story tower at 159 West 48th Street in Times Square. Designed by SLCE Architects and developed by Extell and Hard Rock International, the 442-foot-tall, 291,000-square-foot structure will yield 446 guest rooms by the corner of West 48th Street and Seventh Avenue. Aecom Tishman is the general contractor for the Midtown project.

Since our last update, the remainder of the glass curtain wall and façade panels have been installed, and only some finishing touches remain to be completed on the podium levels.

Photographs of the main southern elevation along West 48th Street show the wall of uniform glass flanked by black paneling. The podium is clad in a light-colored stone assembly. When viewed from Seventh Avenue, the tower’s straightforward design blends well with the architecture of the surrounding neighborhood. Its large LED billboards are already operational and flash colorful advertisements 24/7.

Tourists Returning to Times Square, But Far Less Than Before Pandemic
Sep 16, 2021
Commercial Observer Excerpt

Broadway turned its lights back on this week, but the city has a long way to go before Times Square and other attractions are teeming with tourists.

...

Times Square Alliance President Tom Harris expects even more people to come through the Great White Way this fall, now that “Wicked,” “The Lion King,” and “Hamilton” welcomed back audiences Tuesday and Theater District restaurant staples like Carmine’s and Joe Allen reopened.

“It’s exciting times,” Harris said. “I was out last night and went to all of the shows that were open, and there was a festive mood in front of theaters. You could feel the excitement in the air.”

Whether that momentum continues through the holiday season is harder to predict. The number of visitors to the heart of Midtown has increased 41 percent since May, when an average of 148,000 came through. New hotels are under construction, too, including TSX Broadway at 1568 Broadway, the Riu Hotel at 145 West 47th Street, a future Marriott on 46th street, and a Hard Rock Hotel opening on 48th Street in 2022.

But, foot traffic in the area is still 44 percent below 2019 levels, when pedestrian counts averaged 380,000 per day, the Times Square Alliance said. And the city’s tourism arm, NYC & Company, forecasted in April that New York would receive 36.4 million visitors by year’s end, slightly more than half of the 66.6 million tourists who traveled into town in 2019.

Hotel occupancy has also been slow to rebound since bottoming out last spring, when nonessential businesses shuttered and international travel ceased. Now, hotels in Times Square are about 55 to 65 percent full in recent weeks, Times Square Alliance said.

Yes, the 1970s Rockefeller Center western extension on 6th Avenue. They work to complement the original 1940s Center. On left is the tallest at 1251 Avenue of the Americas (formerly Exxon Bldg) and center is 1221 (formerly McGraw-Hill). As a trio they are still extremely impressive.

As for the Hard Rock Hotel, what a sensible way to provide windows, which are both practical and work well in the overall pattern of the facade - window framing is often bulky and ugly.

It's not stunning in any way, but its not bad either. Decent filler and much better than the u/c hotel infront of it. This area has some nice buildings that need some power washing.
