Newcastle Corner - Commercial - Hutten Heights - Under Construction

Newcastle Corner is a convenience retail centre orientated towards Newcastle's higher income residential suburbs situated in a micro retail node outside the CBD. The development is at the intersection of two major roads which easily connect the site with the major suburbs in the area.

Phase 1 is now under construction and is the bulk of the development, consisting of mixed retail of about 19-25 shops.

Pre-phases already built at the busy intersection encompass the fast food component which include a McDonalds drive-thru, Chicken Licken drive-thru, Ocean Basket and a Nando's drive-thru.

Phase 3 which includes a Filling Station is now completed.

Progress on Newcastle Corner seems a little slow (with only the columns being cast) considering the anticipated opening in April 2016! None the less, the SASOL Filling station is completed and looks ready for opening within this month!

Great to see continued development in the area. Will be visiting soon, I hope. Newcastle's retail growth seems to outpace its residential development, though. I could be wrong...

You are correct Cuberman! From my observation residential growth in NN is slower than the retail sector. This is great news as Newcastle has a burgeoning population. These kind of developments will at least create employment in the area.

I hope you enjoy your visit to Newcastle!

Newcastle Corner's next phase is set to open in the third quarter of 2017, promising the city's residents with a great mix of new tenancies. Here is an article on things to come!

R150 million Newcastle Corner's second phase to open with Dis-Chem in September 2017

Monday, 10th April 2017

Newcastle Corner, the new 7,000sqm convenience shopping centre that opened its first phase in August last year, will open its second phase the September, anchored by the city’s very first Dis-Chem.

Dis-Chem’s store will span 1,200sqm adding to the Newcastle Corner’s great convenience shopping for locals and visitors alike.

Chief Executive Officer of the Dis-Chem Group, Ivan Saltzman explains that by expanding into Newcastle, Dis-Chem will be meeting a strong customer demand from an attractive market.

“We are pleased to be able to offer local residents everything they have come to expect and value from Dis-Chem, right on their doorsteps. Newcastle Corner has the correct profile for the first Dis-Chem Pharmacy in the area, and we are proud to become part of this great community,” notes Saltzman.

Dis-Chem’s addition to Newcastle Corner continues the shopping centre’s track record of retail firsts for the KwaZulu-Natal’s third largest city. Its first phase is anchored by the first SuperSpar in Newcastle, in a 2,500sqm store. The shopping centre’s next phase will introduce even more popular retail choices for the city’s shoppers. And, there’s even more great shopping and entertainment variety to come.

Newcastle Corner is being developed in three phases at a total investment of R150 million. The centre enjoys a prime position at the entrance to Newcastle. The development is being driven by Retail Network Services – a leading full-service retail leasing and development specialist – together with local partners. Construction of the first phase of the mall began in July 2015.

Gavin Tagg, CEO of Retail Network Services, comments: “We are excited to grow this new convenience centre development and give the people of Newcastle an ever-increasing selection of convenient, safe and quality new retail and leisure in their very own top-notch shopping centre. We are especially pleased to introduce Dis-Chem to the city’s shoppers.”

Newcastle Corner’s already-open first phase also includes Mica, Just Plastics, [email protected], Spec Savers, Cell Fix, Petremendous, and Nedbank, FNB and Capitec ATMs too. A Sasol service station is also open at the centre, and trading very well. In addition, the road-front section of the property is home to four stand-alone restaurants, including a McDonalds Drive Thru, Chicken Licken Drive Thru, Ocean Basket and Nando’s.

For its second phase, Newcastle Corner is also set to include an exciting range of restaurants and fast foods, such as RocoMamas, Fishaways and Debonairs. What’s more, Newcastle Corner will also introduce Kodak and a gym.

Tagg believes that in addition to its retail variety, the centre is a welcome asset for the local Newcastle community for several reasons, but especially because of its convenience factor.

Research commissioned by Retail Network Services reveals Newcastle Corner is ideally located for easy access on the corner of the highly visible and busy Memel Road (R34) and Allen Street intersection. While the R34/Memel Road is the key arterial into Newcastle from Johannesburg, Allen Road directs traffic from the buzzing CBD past the centre to some of Newcastle’s most affluent residential suburbs, including Hutten Heights, Pioneer Park and Barry Hertzog Park.

Tagg says: “Newcastle Corner has a great location in an established and developing node. With this new centre and its upcoming second phase, we are creating a consolidated convenience retail and eatery node on the main access road from Johannesburg into Newcastle.”

Tagg also reveals that Newcastle Corner’s third phase will build on the success of the great choice, convenience and vibe of its earlier phases, in line with Retail Network Service’s strategy to realise the exciting vision for this development. This gives local shoppers even more to look forward to.

Phase 2 of Newcastle Corner opened on the 30th November 2017 to much jubilation from Newcastle's citizens, following its successful trading history since its original opening in August 2016. Although not all of the line shops opened on the day, the major Phase 2 Anchors of Dis-Chem, JustGym Planet Fitness and CNA drew in the crowds. Other Phase 2 tenants include; Jonsonn Workwear Depot, Fishaways, Debonairs, Xtreme Nutrition, Kodak Express & Master Maths.

Traffic was severely affected in the area during the first few days of opening, as seen on the below screenshot taken on the first day.

Following my visit to Newcastle Corner last week, herewith some shots of the completed development. The centre offered a pleasurable shopping experience and has a positive, upbeat vibe :)
