NOLA Metro at 84% of Pre K numbers

Excellent news on the recovery going on down here in NOLA. The non-flooded areas have bounced back quickly. It is the harder hit areas like St. Bernard Parish and eastern New Orleans where the return of people has been slow. This is mainly due to a lack of flood maps telling us how high we have to raise our houses to get federal flood insurance. Hopefully...we will get these once the levees are brought up to standard.

Just doing quick math in my head...this would give the metro a population of around 1.1 million.

Here is the article using the Nielson estimates for the region.

Not surprising...add in Tangipahoa and St. James Parish, where many are living and commuting from to the City...and we're at 1.3 million.
Yea that would give metro New Orleans a current population of around 1.14 million. And if you add Tangipahoa Parish alone, that number would be up to around 1.27 million.
Looks as though everyone that can move back has done so. The inhabitable areas must be completely packed, according to those numbers.
The inhabitable areas are just starting to come back...I drive around Lakeview and Gentilly often. The increased numbers are coming from FEMA trailor populations, people living with other people, renting all available apartments and homes in the area, etc. Lakeview is about 30 to 40 % back and living on their properties, although, a recent survey of Lakeview found that 96% of the residents there, plan on returning home in 2006.

I drive through Lakeview everyweekend to see how many more people are back. The difference between December and the current day is incredible. I was getting nervous in December because it seemed like the place was dead. Now.....it's obvious that the area is coming back.
Good to hear that New Orleans is starting to regain its population. Needs a lot more assistance though.

Thanks..One thing I can assure you and everyone...it's more than a job that draws people back to New Orleans...it's our way of life, our approach to life, the food, and just the feeling one gets while being in the middle of this city....
