Nonsmokers flock to restaurants as fears prove unfounded

Saturday, May 05, 2007

Fears expressed by operators of restaurants and karaoke premises that the smoking ban which came into effect January 1 could hurt their business appear to be unfounded, according to the results of a survey published Friday.
The poll by the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong interviewed 1,452 people aged 12 and over last week, 1,271 of whom were nonsmokers.

About 35 percent of 181 smokers, or 63 people, said that they were not eating out as much as previously after the sweeping ban on smoking was implemented.

However, about 30 percent of the nonsmokers - 382 people - said that they were now eating out more often because of the ban.

It was the same picture at karaoke lounges with 57 smokers (or 31.5 percent) saying they made less frequent visits and 576 nonsmokers (45.3 percent) saying the frequency of their visits had not been affected.

When asked if the ban had encouraged them to sing out more often, 234 nonsmokers said yes while 77 smokers (42.5 percent) said the opposite.

The Legislative Council passed a ban on smoking at all indoor workplaces including restaurants and entertainment premises such as karaoke lounges.

However, bars open to those aged 18 and above, mahjong parlors, commercial bathhouses, massage establishments and ladies' night clubs have been given until July 2009 to implement the ban.

DAB health spokesman Li Kwok-ying said the current scope of law enforcement in combating smoking in prohibited areas was inadequate.

He would like to see more stringent enforcement of the ban to deter smoking in public places. He added, however, that counseling and medication to aid those wishing to kick the habit should be offered by the government free of charge.

Frankly I prefer a smoke-free HK whilst dining, second-hand smokes are quite inconsiderate on others' health
I think a restaurant should be able to have a smoking area if it is separated by an air curtain, or even better, a glass or solid wall.

I know in some Cafe de Coral they have that.... mainly the one in Wong Tai Sin... it's separated by a glass wall.
So the smokers end up in a fish tank.
