Didn't see this in another thread but it may have been discussed

Nottingham is today named as the crime capital of England and Wales, with its residents four times as likely to fall victim as those of the safest cities.

Research by the Reform think-tank shows in detail how where you live has a huge impact on your chances of being killed, raped, assaulted, robbed or burgled.

It lets the public see, for the first time, how their police force is performing compared to those in other major cities.

The Home Office has refused to produce a league table, despite having all the information it needs to do so.

Reform said it carried out the research in a bid to drive up standards among the worst forces.

Blair Gibbs, one of the report's authors, said: 'People choose to live where they live. They should not, as a result of that, face wildly different risks of crime.'

The findings are a huge blow to Nottingham.

The city has been fighting to rebuild its reputation after an explosion in gun crime which included the shocking murder of teenager Danielle Beccan as she returned home from a fair.

Shopkeeper Marion Bates, 64, was shot dead as she defended her daughter Xanthe from an armed robber during a raid on her jewellery store in 2003.

Last year, the Home Office sent in a hit squad to see if the force could cope but the shooting of PC Rachael Bown in February was another setback.

At one stage Steve Green, the chief constable of Nottinghamshire Police, admitted his force was 'struggling to cope' with the increase in violent crime.

He suggested it might have to 'farm out' murder investigations to other forces - although he later retracted his remarks.

The Reform study shows that Nottingham remains plagued by all types of crime.

At 115.5 crimes for every 1,000 residents, it has almost four times the level of the safest towns in the rankings, Poole and Southend.

It also had the highest number of murders per 100,000 population, with 5.21, followed by St Helens, 4.87. Brighton and Hove and Cambridge had no murders in 2005.

Nottingham had the highest levels of vehicle crime per 1,000 population, 40.30, followed by Manchester on 39.65.

The city also featured in the worst five for robbery, burglary, assault, rape and gun crime.

Portsmouth had the highest number of rapes per 10,000 population, 6.58, followed by Peterborough on 6.24. Exeter and Swansea had the lowest.

Leicester had the highest number of assaults per 1,000 population, 30.91, closely followed by Bradford's 30.87. Southend and York had the lowest.

The report gathered statistics from police forces using the Freedom of Information Act and took population data from the 2001 census.

It said there may be a case for treating each London borough as a large town in its own right, rather than as one huge city.

When the boroughs were added to the original table of 55 towns and cities, only two were placed in the ten worst crime areas - Westminster, 7th, and Islington 10th.

Other parts of London were among the least affected by crime in the UK - Richmond and

Kingston came 80th and 83rd respectively out of 87.

Tory spokesman Nick Herbert 'Crime statistics manipulated the Government tell us nothing.

The public needs robust and accessible measures so they can the performance of local police.

These figures, which reveal large regional disparities, will make uncomfortable reading for the worst forces.'

The Home Office has been criti-cised by the Statistics Commission for the quality of its crime figures, which offer no attempt at a comparison between different forces.

James Frayne, campaign director of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "Violent crime is out of control in many cities across Britain, which have become virtual no-go areas for ordinary families.

"Simply throwing more of taxpayers' money at the problem is not going to sort this out. What we really need is to reduce the power Westminster politicians have over the police and increase the power of local people by boosting local accountability."

¦ Reform covered 57 towns and cities with populations of 100,000 or more but not all were able to provide data in all categories.

Yes it has been discussed. Conclusion: a load of rubbish due to bad research and favourable statistics that in some cases only survey certain parts of cities.

this list is a load of shite.

nottinghams city boundaries are very tight and do not reflect the actual city area. whereas many of the other places include the more affluent suburbs in their research - london for example!

erm.. they list Sutton Coldfield separately to Birmingham... last time I checked Sutton was classed as a town within Birmingham city??? If you're talking about the city centre then crime has fallen dramatically due to a massive police presence but where do those criminals go... places where the police won't give em shit and where people are too scared or downtrodden to report crime.

I dont know about them, all i know is that Nottinghams city boundary includes all the shit parts and doesnt include the richer areas to the west for example, they are clearly as much a part of the city as anywhere else. Someone had posted the stats somewhere comparing it all.

If you could include individual boroughs of London which as it goes, have populations that exceed that of Nottingham. You'll find quite easily some London boroughs would be on top of most of those lists. Camden for one would be sky high, as would Tower Hamlets and Hackney.

If you look at the populations of the cities, they are all completely wrong because they pick and choose what areas to record crime in. Clearly the East and SE England and West Midlands look much safer than the rest of the country as shown. Twice as likely to be a victim of gun crime in Northampton than London? Give me break.

Since everyone knows that the figures are exaggerated for Nottingham as they don't include over half of the actual city (including most of the good bits), why doesn't Nottingham Council try to merge the boroughs together (Broxtowe, Rushcliffe etc. with Nottingham). These figures and bad publicity have seriously damaged the city's image. I live in Broxtowe apparently, but I'm pretty damn sure there's no gap in the urban sprawl between me and the centre. It's nonsense.

Seriously, they need that Sheriff back--like I said before in another thread. That guy was a Grade-A ass kicker that didnt take shit from anyone. If some "chav" was starting shit down at the park--he would come down with some guards ready to start slicing little boys in flannel hats up.
