Daily flights to Detroit connects Stateline Area to 162 destinations

ROCKFORD - The Northwest Chicagoland International Airport at Rockford began offering daily flights to Detroit operated by Northwest Airlines on Monday.

The airline service is making a return trip to Rockford after leaving in 2001.

The carrier, Pinnacle Airlines, will offer two daily flights each way between Rockford and Detroit Metro International Airport.

Using the new carrier at Rockford will enable travelers to connect with 900 destinations around the world, according to Derek Martin, airport deputy director.

The two daily flights seat up to 50 passengers.

"Now the business traveler has the ability to work in their office, get on a flight, fly 45 minutes and be in any major international or domestic airport. It's a great opportunity for the business traveler to take advantage of Rockford Airport," Martin said.

The move was made to bring the airport one big step closer to becoming a primary alternative to Chicago's overburdened airports, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, and former Rockford Mayor Doug Scott announced in a press conference held in January.

"If you're the owner of a company and you're trying to decide where to open a new business, there are six words you never want to hear: 'You can't get there from here.' Those are six words you won't ever hear about Rockford. It's taken more than three years of frank discussions and negotiations, but we're delighted today to announce the return of one of the world's best air carriers, Northwest Airlines, to Northwest Chicagoland International Airport," Durbin said.

With Rockford on board, Northwest now offers service to 162 destinations from Detroit.

Northwest offers service out of O'Hare International and Midway International airports and opened a new terminal building in Detroit in 2002.

Pinnacle Airlines' has subcontracted their baggage handling and check in work to Emery Air, a fixed base operator which performs handling for Hooters Air LLC and Sunship 1.

The new flights depart Detroit daily at 3:10 p.m. and 7 p.m., arriving in Rockford at 3:30 p.m. and 7:19 p.m.

The flights depart Rockford daily at 7:10 am and 5:54 p.m., arriving at Detroit at 9:30 a.m. and 8:15 p.m.

Northwest Airlines Corp. is making a return trip to Rockford after leaving in 2001.

Tickets for flights went on sale in February.

Rockford did not have passenger service between 2001 and 2003, when TransMeridian Airlines Inc. came to the airport.

This past year, however, Hooters Air LLC started offering flights between Rockford and Atlanta; Denver; Las Vegas; and Myrtle Beach.

Sunship 1 offers flights between Rockford and Cancun, Mexico.

this development affects the entire Chicagoland region. Hopefully it will be another nail in the Peotone coffin.

thereby preserving O'Hare's unrivalled status and halting the unnecessary sprawl towards a potential Peotone airport.

Hey Rockford, glad you're back...I thought you might have gone on a three state killing spree. "Northwest Chicagoland" is quite a stretch.

I like this quote: "thereby preserving O'Hare's unrivalled status and halting the unnecessary sprawl towards a potential Peotone airport." But encouraging unecessary sprawl towards the existing Rockford airport right?

Rockford... Post another Rockford thread in the Chicago forum, and you will be banned. I mean HELLO? You just got suspended for a week for trolling the Chicago forum. Obviously you didn't get the message.

This is the Chicago forum, meaning it covers the city of Chicago, and its contiguous nieghborhoods... It is not the "Chicagoland" forum, covering all areas that Chicago influences. If that was the case, then half of the midwest would be discussed here. It isn't, and it won't be, because that isn't what the forum leadership or Chicago forumers want. You will not be warned again.
