It never fails to impress me the range of impressive historic architecture in New York, but conversely how utterly crap the paving and general street scape is. I think its this what stops people calling New York a beautiful city.
^^ Not sure if New York ever been called a beautiful city. I think it is an impressive, unique, full of life city and how much interesting... there are beautiful buildings, the skyline is beautiful, parks are beautiful, but there is no overall beauty from the street level. The architectue lacks of coherence, the pavement is quite bad but in a way that's what makes it an energizing urban chaos
