NYC Observation decks

I will be in NYC over Memorial Day and was wondering what are some good public observation decks in the city. Free or charge doesn't really bother me. I'm just wanting some good pictures out of it.

There are two.

Empire State Building, it has one on the 86st floor (most popular, open air) and on 101 floor (not very popular, same views, more expensive, relatively small windows, closed in area). You see the whole city, on one hand you're looking at the entire Midtown and on the other you see Downtown far away.

Rockefeller Center "Top of the Rock". You're in the middle of midtown, surrounded by skyscrapers. Open air.

Sadly no observation deck in the downtown.

Really? I thought there would be more. Thanks for the help.
Yes :( you're welcome
Do the Top of the Rock. It's superior to the ESB IMHO.
From a tourist point of view ( excuse the pun ) and if your someone who likes SSC...you have to see both.....ESB because..It's... The.... Empire State Building!!!!!! and Top of the Rock because you have a great view of NY with the ESB in the view!!!!! These two pics don't show much view but show part of the decks....I think the mast atop the ESB is worth the $'s as well...but that's just me....why...because it's there!

I agree, if you're in New York, you should visit both of them.
Lately, I have been going to the Top of the Rock b/c there aren't that big of lines there.
I recently noticed that you can now get Top of the Rock tickets at street level before entering the concourse to where the elevator for it is.
I reserved my tickets online to avoid even the street-side lineup.
My suggestion would be to go to one of the many rooftop restauarants/bars in the city. My favorite is 230 5th ave. (midtown) You get great views of the city and the food/drinks are great!
The GE Bldg does have the Rainbow Room, but I don't know if it's easy to get or not.
I can't even remember the last time i have been on the Empire State, it was quite close to where i stayed in NYC, i think in 1999 or 2000, damn time passes fast.
1998 i was on the WTC, i didn't know about any observation deck on the GE Building back then though.

How expensive are those?

^ 230 5th is free to get into (it's just a bar/restaurant). A beer will run you $10 and Apps will cost about $15. I is on the 20-something floor and you get panoramic views of Midtown/Downtown. It can get quite crowded at Happy Hour.

That's pretty expensive
