Heading south brings us into the hood known as South Jamaica. It goes from from Liberty Ave to the Belt Pkwy between Merrick Blvd with Baisley Blvd and the Van Wyck Expwy (I-678). This hood is both reisdential and commerical. It was first settled by the Dutch in 1656 as they bought the land from the Canarsie Indians, calling it Rustdorp. In 1664, the English capture it and rename it Jamaica after the Jameco Indians. For the most part, the area was left as farmland, though it was a major trading post for them. In 1867, the South Side RR built its tracks through here. It wasn't until the 1900's when this area finally saw developement when a number of houses were built. In 1947, Idelwild (now JFK) Airport opened on the tip for commericial flights in that LGA was too small, and it caused Floyd Bennet Field to close down being obsolete. In 2003, the JFK Airtrain had its tracks over the Van Wyck Expwy to carry passangers to the airport, which replaced the buses. Most of today's residents include blacks, Latino's, and from the West Indies. Only recently has South Jamaica gotten its own distinction from Jamaica itself, though this is not its downtown. It is not a surprise to find a number of airport hotels here. Some even call it "The Hood of the Half Dollar" b/c 50 Cent came from here. You can get here by taking the Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q7, Q8, Q9, Q9A, Q10, Q40, Q84, Q85, Q111, Q112, Q113, B15, N4, X63, and X64 buses. Here is what you will find in South Jamaica.
