Heading east brings us into the hood known as Springfield Gardens. It goes from Rockaway (NY 878) to Merrick Blvds between Farmers/Springfield Blvds. This hood is mostly residential. It was first settled in the 1660's by the English when they founded the town of Jamaica. For the most part it was farmland until the mid 1800's. In 1867, the South Side RR opened up a station at Springfield Blvd, and the area was called Locust Manor. However, it wasn't until the 1920's when it really became developed. The name Springfield Gardens came from Springfield Pk, which was created with this place. In 1960, the LIRR station was closed in favor of rennovating the Locust Manor Station on Farmers Blvd. There isn't too much to see here b/c it's mostly houses with businesses on main streets, not to mention the planes at JFK Intl Airport. Nobody knowns why it was called Locust Manor, but some claim it could have been after a mansion that was here. You can get here by taking the Far Rockaway Branch of the LIRR to the Locust Manor Station. Here is what you will find in Springfield Gardens.
