Bhubaneswar’s Baramunda ISBT project nears completion

BHUBANESWAR: The grand Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) project at Bhubaneswar’s Baramunda missed its deadline, again. Planned to be completed by June this year, it has been grappling with issues related to encroachment and moving bus owners as well as vendors. A crucial legal issue pertaining to a private lodge was sorted recently. All of these could, finally, push the progress of the high-profile project. The Bridge and Roof Company India Limited, a Central Government undertaking, was awarded the project with a bid offer of `160.6 crores.

After Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reviewed the project in December 2020, the State government announced the ISBT will be ready within 18 months to become a landmark in the Capital. Out of the 46,474 sq m area, the terminal space will occupy 12,241 sq m while commercial space will be around 15,884 sq m. The entire project is planned on 15.5 acre.

As per the proposal, the outer ring road will originate from National Highway-53 at Goshala and connect the Sambalpur-Rourkela Biju Expressway at Ranikhinda in Sason on the outskirts of Sambalpur city.
It will pass through Chiplima, Gunderpur, Maneswar, Jayantpur, Sindurpankh and Tabla. The road will meet NH-53, Biju Expressway and NH-55 (Cuttack-Sambalpur road) at different places. Once the outer ring road is constructed, heavy vehicles plying on NH-53, NH-55 and Biju Expressway will not have to enter Sambalpur city.

The NHAI has floated tender for construction of the six-lane capital region ring road (CRRR) from Gobindpur near Kuspangi on NH-42 to Tangi near Manguli on NH-16.

A tender of Rs 1381.33 crore has been floated for construction of the 40.330 km stretch of the CRRR within 30 months.

The NHAI has initiated the process of obtaining forest and environment clearances for the project. The land acquisition process has also begun for the key infrastructure project, said a senior NHAI official.

The CRRR project will provide a parallel connectivity of NH-16 bypassing Khurda town, Bhubaneswar, Athagarh town, Cuttack city and Choudwar town.

The 111.2-km long ring road will originate from Rameswar on NH-16, pass through NH-55 at Govindpur and terminate near Tangi on NH-16.

The CRRR is proposed to be developed as 6-lane carriageway including a major six-lane bridge over river Mahanadi.
