France considers new offshore ports
16 July 2009
Lloyd's List

THE French government has been told to look at the possibility of creating offshore ports to preserve the coastline from the heavy dredging required for the reception of large vessels, writes Andrew Spurrier.

The construction of such ports, which proponents say could be needed as early as 2015, is one of a number of proposals to emerge from a nationwide consultation destined to help the government to draw up an environmentally sustainable strategy for the maritime and coastal economies.

Other recommendations include measures to promote the creation of a French ship demolition and recycling industry and the tagging of marine fuels to make pollution sources traceable.

The Grenelle de la Mer, as the consultation was called, involved three months of meetings and discussions involving all maritime sectors, local authorities, environmental groups and the public.
