Omaha: A Romantic Evening in the River City

After winter and flash floods it was a perfect evening to go out and take some pics. The sunset tonight was a great backdrop for these shots.

Around 19th and St. Mary's.

From on top of the Redick Hotel

The Greenhouse. Quite possibly one of my favorite buildings to photograph.

Skyline from the 10th St. Bridge

The Gene Leahy Mall

The Landmark Center and Orpheum Tower looming over the Mall.
Hopefully I will start working in the Landmark Center if my interview next week goes well.
The view is great from up there.

Sensual Sky

The Heartland of America Park.

The Park Fountain. One of the highest shooting fountains in the world at 300'.

The Fountain changes many colors but with the exposure setting they all just ended up looking white.

In the summer, boats go out on the lagoon. One is a big tour boat.
The other is a Venice type gondola for couples.

On Farnam in front of the Greenhouse

On Farnam with the Burlington building foreground.

Arch in the Mall. The Old Market is visible in the archway.

Omaha looks liek a cool city. Never been but plan to. Where are the cool districts with pubs and places to eat?
That fountain is bad-ass!

Old Market, southeast of the main skyscrapers, and North Downtown, which is, north of downtown. It's nice.

The Old Market. There are other places scattered around Downtown and between Midtown but the Old Market is the focal point and most concentrated area.

You can see it in the archway here.

Nice pics DTO!

Question: do all cities with a river get to use the nickname of "River City"? I just ask because I've never heard Omaha referenced as such and thus didn't realize it carried this nickname.
^^
I was wondering the same thing when I opened the thread. I live in Louisville, and we call ourselves the River City a lot. (Our transportation department is TARC-Transit Authority of the River City) So do cities like Omoha, Jacksonville and Memphis dawn the same name? Anyone know other "River Cities"?

Yes River City is a common name for Omaha. The word "Omaha" from the Omaha Indian tribe literally translated means "above all others on a stream. So the translation is pretty much River City.
Mason City, Iowa, is famously known as River City too thanks to hometown composer Meredith Willson who based his hit Broadway Musical (and later movie) The Music Man on his boyhood hometown - River City (Mason City), Iowa.

Here's a list of River City's across the world according to Wikipedia:

Wichita commonly refers to itself as River City.
I'm sure lots of cities on a river call them selves river cities. Just like I know many state capitals call themselves Star cities. Close to home examples are Lincoln and Des Moines. Especially Lincoln though.

But I don't think as many cities name translates into "river city" as much as the Omaha Indian word does for the City of Omaha.

very, very nice. i love those pics of the 2 fountains.
That's wierd, I never heard of Wichita being called River city - just the River fest ---- the river really still is nothing special...yet, with no river transport to speak of and given it's depth which is a couple feet?

Yes, Jacksonville is called the River City locally.
