Thought I might as well start a thread on this.

The official name is Central Park

It features 7 towers (6 res & 1 office) with a total height of approximately 67m (tower 7)
Also includes a major retail component, pedestrian areas, parking and a new street.

Towers will range between 17 and 20 stories (not including ground floors)

Approval sought for $200m seven-tower project on Spence St, Cairns

CAIRNS has been tipped to be the “dominant city” of Northern Australia after a major milestone was reached in what’s being called the CBD’s largest private development to date.

Singapore’s Aspial Corporation lodged a development application this week with Cairns Regional Council seeking approval for the first stage of a $200 million, seven-tower project on a 24,000 sq m site in Spence St.

Aspial plans what it calls an integrated development, with residential, retail, dining and office space and public recreational areas.

Six of the towers will be residential, providing another 1500 apartments in the city.

The first stage, a high rise on Spence St behind the police station, is set to be completed in 2016.

Aspial bought the site in February this year for $18.9 million and plans to start building on it by the end of this year.

Chief executive Koh Wee Seng said the project would also feature public spaces and a range of amenities for locals and tourists.

“We are incredibly enthusiastic about the future of Cairns and the city’s growth potential, and we are working closely with local contractors and businesses and the council and State Government to progress this exciting project,” Mr Koh said.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said council would properly assess the development application, but believed it already represented a vote of faith in Cairns.

“The fact that the proponents have selected Cairns as the location for a development of this scale and quality is testament to the growing confidence in this city,” he said.

“Cairns, and indeed this region, is on the cusp of the most exciting time in its history.

“We are poised to become the dominant city in Northern Australia in terms of economic activity, population growth and the opportunities that we offer.”

Member for Cairns and Assistant Minister for Tourism, Gavin King, said the project had the potential to transform Cairns’ CBD.

“Having met Mr Koh several times over the past nine months and visited some of his development projects on a recent trade mission to Singapore, I am extremely im*pressed with Aspial’s diligence, professionalism and design principles,” he said.

“This is a truly exciting time to live in Cairns, following so many tough years.

“This project will be great for local tradies and the construction industry, and bolster our renewed push to secure direct flights with Singapore.”

Aspial Corporation is a major builder around Australia, with plans also for a 100-storey, 319m -metre tall residential tower in Melbourne.

Exceptional for NQ! With the addition of the Casino resort development Cairns is really shifting things up a gear.

Strange that Tower 3 is the only one with a strong design, the other towers seem somewhat bleak in comparison.

Tower 3 is the office tower I think. The rest are residential.

Where on Spence street is this? I'm trying to visualise it in my head..? Also, what do you all think about the creation of a new road through the development vs. pedestrian only...?

Should liven up that part of town. It usually seems pretty dead around there now.
I think once P&O's Pacific Eden is based at the adjacent cruise ship terminal full time the area should liven up considerably.

There is still heaps of land available around that area. Does anyone remember the Cairns Entertainment Precinct proposal. I believe something very iconic could still happen there.

^^ It's such a shame that it never got off the ground. The civic theatre is so tired nowadays and really doesn't cut the mustard for professional standard productions to come to town...

Well from what I can tell nobody goes to the Civic Theatre anyway. The Convention Centre gets the big international acts and Tanks Arts Centre gets many of the smaller acts.

Earth works began on this today.

WORKS have started on the much-touted Aspial seven towers project, after Queensland Premier Campbell Newman formally announced it in Cairns this morning.

The project, dubbed “NOVA8”, will feature seven commercial and residential towers to built along Spence St opposite Cairns Central shopping centre.

Construction workers equipped with excavators, graders, front-end loaders and trucks were already clearing away rubble ahead of the premier’s announcement late this morning.

Mr Newman announced the start of the first $120 million stage of project this morning.

The premier is in Cairns to make a range of announcements as part of the state election campaign with the construction start today to be the highlight.

Singaporean developer Aspial Corporation has decided to bring forward the tower project by several months after committing to a July 1 start.
