This Oxford House project appears very similar in general form and scale to the existing building, though aesthetically is better. It is assumed that it is not a reclad.
Very nice clad; simple, subtle, clean lines, geometric and colourful with darkened glass. But as I have said before, a few more stories would give the street more of an urban as opposed to a suburban feel. Being unusually straight for a London street, it would benefit from some greater height.
I would never call Oxford street suburban. I think the beauty of Oxford Street and its surrounding area's is the very fact it's relatively low rise compared to the city much like many of the large city's of Europe . The main problematic buildings are the tall buildings which are completely out of place. The incredibly ugly building behind the London College of Fashion was a mistake.
Im somewhere in between, the Eastern end of Oxford street has seen a lot of change and £ spent on it, it is not aesthetically and retail wise more exciting and diverse than the immediate west section from Ox Circus up to Selfridges. It remains the biggest mess in central London as a street, Westminster council should have the West End removed from their grip and a new WE body created that can serve these areas as they should be.
To be fair the whole street has been disrupted by Crossrail. It's going through a major change at the moment and yes it's not pretty towards Tottenham Court Road but I think this will change as new developments complete and refurbishments progress. In the past Westminster did very little it's true but is now progressing with a substantial public realm project that will refurbish the whole length of Oxford Street and Marble Arch, it's still not pedestrianised but moving in the right direction. The Mayor's feeble attempt went no where.
