Ontario cottage country to host 2010 G8 summit
Updated Thu. Jun. 19 2008 1:47 PM ET

The Canadian Press

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada will host its fifth G8 summit in 2010, this time in Ontario cottage country.

The international political event will be held at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, a sprawling golf getaway in the heart of Muskoka. Calling it a "jewel in the Canadian Shield," Harpers says the event will be a boon for the local economy.

He anticipates new investments in local infrastructure, noting the 2002 G8 summit in Kananaskis, Alta., generated an estimated $300 million for the regional economy.

Huntsville Mayor Claude Doughty says news of the event came as a welcome surprise.

Besides the sheer beauty of the region, Doughty says the resort is an ideal spot from a security standpoint given its isolation and limited access.

Deerhurst is overrated IMO. I've never stayed there, but I checked it out once as a caterer for my wedding. The Delta just down the highway seems nicer.

It is a gorgeous area though... I go up there all the time to get to Algonquin (hence my name) and I got married at aresort nearby.

I suspect The Harp has decided that poking Ontario in the eye and kicking it in the goolies at the same time is not really all that beneficial in the long run. He is "reaching out" to the rural ridings that might register a few votes for him. I think they should reach back and punch him.

I don't like to say anything, but has anyone noticed that vid is looking a lot like the Harp these days?
It is worrisome. ...

But i suspect that a vote of no confidence will be mad and defeated in the coming months
Not with Dion.

Now more than ever the Conservatives are perfecting their image of being evil neocons, but instead of capitalizing on that and destroying them in an election, the Liberals seem content to just sit around and let them pass anything they propose.

"Deerhurst is overrated IMO"
-nah deerhurst is amazing, just really pricy

and as for reaching out to rural ridings ... deerhurst is overwhelmingly used by torontonians and americans. So, although this will help the immediate local economy, i dont think he'll benefit very much from this event polically.

on the other hand i do think it is a great idea for security concerns ... it basically gets rid of them altogether. I remeber when it was in quebec city a while back there were mass protests

If he manages to stay in the PMO till then I will be very mad, and not at him, but at Mr. Dion. But i suspect that a vote of no confidence will be mad and defeated in the coming months (Canada DMCA)
Well, Dion can only avoid an election for a little more than one more year. The Conartists set the date for the next election at Oct. 2009, did they not?

Don't be mad at Dion; he's a loser and he shouldn't be PM anyway, really (he will be though, unfortunately). Let the third-parties (Green and NDP) grow to a force of equal strength to the Bloc. That would put each party in the 40-70 seats range, and then the election after that we might finally get a PM from a respectable party (which neither Fibs nor Cons are). Now that's gonna be an entertaining Parliament.

If by entertaining, you mean effective and responsible. ;)
Among other things, yes. The Conservatives would still be irresponsible fuckwits, but the rest of the major parties, including even the Bloc much as I don't like them, are not so stupid.
