DOTC eyes bus rapid transit, more walkways, car-less cities
source

MANILA, Philippines – The citizens' call for government to devote half of the road to commuters instead of reserving the entire road for private car owners isn't falling on deaf ears, says the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC).

According to DOTC Assistant Secretary for Planning Sherielysse Reyes-Bonifacio, the Share the Road concept may be realized by government plans to build bus rapid transit systems and walkways in the country's urban areas.

More walkways for commuters

Commuters will also be relieved to know that the DOTC is eyeing the addition of strategically placed walkways in urban areas.

The Ortigas Walkways project, a partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has been approved by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

The project aims to connect the entire Ortigas Central Business District using walkways.

The first phase of the project to receive funding is a walkway connecting SM Megamall, Robinsons Galleria and Shangri-La Plaza allowing MRT users to easily access all the MRT stations using a single, continuous passage.

ADB will provide the engineering design while government provides funding for the civil works.

"We hope to bid it out this year and start construction by 2015," said Bonifacio.

The project's impacts are limited, she admits, because it involves only the Ortigas hub but "it's a model we can follow in other areas. It's just a start."

very nice. :eek:kay: Makati and BGC make Ortigas look like a ghetto so I hope this project is going to be started asap.
^^ from the article

i'm more excited for BGC :)

"Bonifacio Global City in Taguig may one day not provide parking spaces. But the city is improving its bus and shuttle system."

"Their idea is to provide parking space outside BGC. You leave your car there then you take the shuttles which can bring you anywhere in BGC."

I do hope they do this soon, the MRT Station in Ortigas is very not pedestrian-friendly. It's very difficult to get into Southbound from Megamall. I can only imagine the relief once the project is done.
More MRT coaches and longer operating hours too!
^^ ^^ ^^

Already had a thread for this, somehow it got removed due to inactivity !!! :eek:hno: Anyhow thanks to sick_n_tired for bringing this back to life again !!!

I wasn't really expecting this project to be on a fast track anyways. I mean, it takes 3-4 years for a condo project to be completed (from render-pre-sell-construction-T/O)...so I kinda put this project on the same track, if not slower. What's good is that current Ortigas residents will benefit from this in the future. Moreover, hopefully this project will spur more commercial projects to be built due to the easier-access, less-traffic, aesthetic-improvement, and pedestrian-friendly benefits this project will give.

I hope they will also include a walkway for the stretch of San Miguel Avenue. People from Stock exchage walk to mega too.
Looking at the project renders above...im really impressed at the elevated walkway portion of this project. I don't know if and when it will be completed but I wonder who will bid on this project...where will the profits come from? Advertising on the walls? Small vendors/kiosks to have designated spaces along the elevated walkway? I understand ADB is partnering up to help finance this project...it just begs the question...where will they profit from this project? They can't be doing this for free...

Well, if they are to put up retail and dining on the walkway together with electronic billboards, I wouldn't mind at all because that would help fund its maintenance. Maybe an events venue too for additional revenue on events. They could also let mall owners of the big three malls in Ortigas Center "adopt" a segment of the walkway's construction and maintenance.

^^I'm with you thomasian. I really hope enough of the big-developers contribute to this project...it'll get it moving faster.
^^ Thanks.

Anyway, special segments of the walkway like this "Opal Road Elevated Plaza" could be given a more catchy name like Sky Plaza instead of Elevated Plaza then have the naming rights sold to make it something like "The Samsung Sky Plaza".

It does look like central mid-levels escalators in Hong Kong because of the elevated plaza.
