actually a old project and planned years ago
but its going to be built now

Location: Turkey

Client: Government of Turkey

Izmit Bay Bridge includes a 3.3 km long suspension bridge with approach roads and a highway, which together will provide a dual, 3-lane route across Izmit Bay. On completion, it would have a main span making it the second longest in the world at 1688 metres, with side spans of 560 metres. Izmit Bay is in an earthquake zone, so the structure was designed to use both steel and concrete. High strength steel will be used for the superstructure of the main bridge, including the towers and the spun cables. A Kvaerner-led Joint Venture, the Anglo-Japanese-Turkish Consortium, which includes the Turkish contractor Enka, Japanese contractors IHI, MHI and NKK, and the trading houses Itochu and Marubeni, was recommended as the preferred BOT proponent.

The bridge engineer for the Government of Turkey on the project was Delcan International.

The design of the Izmit Bay Bridge, with a main span of 1688 m, owes a debt of gratitude to the revolutionary Severn Bridge, which has a suspended span of 987.5 m and was constructed in 1961-66, and to succeeding steel box aerofoil structures such as the Bosphorus Bridges, and the Great Belt East Bridge in Denmark.

Groundbreaking of grand motorway project next week

Turkey will lay the foundation of the Gebze-İzmir highway and the İzmit Gulf Crossing Project that aims to dramatically shorten the distance between İstanbul and İzmir, on October 28.

Cahit Turhan, the head of the General Directorate of Highways (KGM), said Thursday that the motorway that will connect Gebze, of the northwestern province of İzmit, with the Aegean province of İzmir via Orhangazi, of the northwestern province of Bursa.

The company is eager to complete the project, which includes a bridge crossing the İzmit Gulf, within five years -- much less than the stated maximum duration of seven years for the construction as specified in the tender offer, Turhan told Anatolia news agency.

He said the contracting firm was willing to open the Gebze-Bursa and İzmir-Manisa sections of the motorway to traffic first, thus starting to earn money, and then complete the construction of the bridge on İzmit Gulf in three and a half years. Last April the directorate opened a tender for the construction of the motorway and a 3-kilometer-long bridge on the İzmit Gulf.

Nurol-Özaltın-Makyol-Astaldi-Yüksel-Göçay consortium won the tender on a “build, operate and transfer” model for a duration of 22 years and four months, including the time spent constructing the motorway. The entire project is estimated to cost $6 billion. The Bursa-Balıkesir-İzmir highway will begin in the town of Gebze and cross into the town of Orhangazi in Bursa over the Gulf of İzmit. It will proceed from Bursa to the northwestern province of Balıkesir and end in İzmir. The highway will be 420 kilometers long and the suspension bridge on the İzmit Gulf will be 3,000 meters long. Within the framework of the project, 30 viaducts, 4 tunnels, 209 bridges, 18 booths and five highway maintenance-operation centers will be constructed.
