Osprey is a small city/town on the gulf between Venice and Sarasota. On April 27th this project was approved, and it will help give Osprey some urbanism. The project will feature 550 units and about 100,000 square feet of reatil, commercial, and dining space.

Bay Street Village & Towncenter on ABC's Local News 6/4/07

OSPREY - Osprey is starting to change. New homes, businesses and even a library are part of a new development on U-S 41 at Bay Street. It's called the Bay Street Village and Town Center project "Now that this movement is happening and people see there is activity there has been a tremendous amount of activity in the past week alone," says project head Ray Rodriguez. After years of talk and red tape it appears Bay Street Village is plowing forward. "This is a massive project and the county definitely wanted to make sure everything was done right. It took us close to a year."

Rodriguez says they'll bring in more than one hundred businesses. Already shops like Starbucks, cafes, boutiques, salons and restaurants have bought in. Also more than 500-condos and townhouses are set to go up ranging from the mid one hundreds upward to a million dollars. "It's like any urban community. You have a variety of product mix and a variety of square footages. It’s just like going to New York down town."

Besides the residential and commercial uses Bay Street Village will also become home to Osprey's first public library. "It helps the development and the library helps the development. They mutually help each other," says Sarasota County Community Services specialist Larry Arnold. Land has been donated to Sarasota County to house the 9th public library in the county. Either a free standing large library or a smaller high tech design implanted in the mix use." The opportunity for putting a library in a mixed use setting either in a stand alone building or actually within buildings that have residential or commercial." However County leaders do say tax cuts could put the library on hold for now. "We are guardedly optimistic depending on what happens in the state legislature tax reform. But we are excited about the options and hope they come to fruition," says Arnold.

But the progress shows they are one step closer to developing an area many say has been underserved for years. "Eighty five percent of people who live in this community will be able to achieve their daily needs here without getting into an automobile and the biggest thing that has really put us on the map is that we are a green community," says Rodriguez.

It will be pretty interesting to see Osprey more as a destination than a place you drive through. Thanks for the updates
I couldn't locate a map and I'm not incredibly familiar with where in Osprey this will go - is that waterfront solely man-made? A freshwater lagoon? If so, that's a little less exciting.

This is "positive" sprawl in that it's urban, but it doesn't seem to be adjacent to any existing development.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Although I lived in Sarasota for many years, I don't know this area all too well.

Nice project in any event.

It looks like its on the southeast corner of 41 and Bay street. So, looks like it is a manmade lagoon

It is a man made lagoon but it is about 3 blocks from the gulf. Osprey deosn't have much of any vertical development to speak of, as it is mostly idustrial with seafood farming. However, geographically this is pretty much the center of it all.

If they make this project right, it will be the unofficial downtown of Osprey. If they do it wrong, it will end up like Westchase.

This area of Sarasota is pretty plain. Other then a few upscale housing developments, its pretty much just a place that you drive through on US 41 in between Sarasota and Venice. It would be nice to see its development take off other then just the new Wal-Mart that opened last year.
That looks nice, places like this seem to being built alot these days. I hope the water is as blue as in the rendering
Well I still have pretty mixed feelings on this development. Yeah its nice that Osprey is finally getting some new stuff and all but when you take a look at whats happening around the rest of Sarasota County, I'm really hard pressed to think that this project will be that successful. But, I can't really say that until its done and every other project comes to fruition. Anyways good luck to the developer, I hope he knows something about the current marketplace that I don't ;)

I wonder if they are stalling this project for a couple extra months to let the volatile market settle itself. People are not buying houses right now at all in Sarasota. It wouldn't surprise me if they are ready for construction but delay it until January/February.
I figured this project had sort of stalled out and died and then I had forgot about it. But, they are actually deep in construction since my last update 9 months ago. :eek:hno: To make up for it I will post all construction photos.

Good to see that it is actually coming along nicely, but are any of the stores actually ocupied?

Steve
^Not sure, but the developemnt is brand new. Maybe not even done yet on the inside especially if businesses are doing interior buildouts.
Those pictures are really great. I like how they show a sort of time lapse view of the buildings being built.
