Hi guys, I had to create a new one for this topic as the old one had a problem in it somewhere, which I'm trying to sort out. Apologies for this!

What happened? Is everything gone for good? :cry:

Well, I'm going to restart it with a portuguese road map of 1984. 34 years ago, only small streches of A1, A2 and A5 (N7 at the time) near Lisbon and Porto were in service. Zero expressways built. All that existed was a big, substandard, still-to-complete national road network:

Any news about the former thread? Is there any chance of bringing it back? :(
The Duarte Pacheco Bridge. Back then Estoril had half the kings and princes in Europe living there in exile. :)

IP3 | Coimbra - Viseu

It's probably the only motorway link still missing in the portuguese road network: the substitution of current expressway IP3 between Viseu and Coimbra is likely to finally develop in the coming years.

The road has a very substandard layout and was one of deadliest in Portugal until, in the main 00's, road authorities decided to separate both traffic directions with concrete barriers: https://www.google.pt/maps/@40.3045...4!1sbUNnY84v0-MG8xhT55IlXw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

IP3 is the main connection bewteen the two provincial capitals but also the fastest and cheapest way to connect the northeast with the capital Lisbon. Nowadays it carries about 13000 vpd near Viseu and 22000 vpd near Coimbra, and congestion in the main holidays is pretty common. A new environmental analysis is underway and, as far as the first available map shows, the new motorway will depart from the provisional end of A13 at Ceira, Coimbra, heading northeast in a new alignment until it meets current IP3 near Santa Comba Dão. The remaining section towards Viseu will probably result of a duplication of the actual road given the smoother terrain of the region.

The new motorway will take the name of one of the motorways it will connect (A13 or A24) and will have circa 70 km.

The one that goes west from Lisbon towards Oeiras. The first sections of the A1 motorway from Lisbon to Porto were opened in the very early 60s I believe.

According to wiki (and I think this info is correct) these were the first motorway openings in Portugal:

1944: A5 (former N7): 8 km Lisbon - National Stadium (Jamor)
1961: A1 (former N1): 25 km Lisbon - Vila Franca de Xira
1963: A1 (former N1): 11 km Porto - Carvalhos
1966: A2 (then simply called "AE do Sul"): 16 km Lisbon - Almada - Fogueteiro
1977: A1: 6 km Vila Franca de Xira - Carregado
Madeira Island

VE-3 » Fajã de Ovelha to Ponta do Pargo

The 4 tunnels were already finished in 2008 when the construction hault due to economic crisis of the Madeira Autonomus Goverment, but the acess roads weren`t.

The data on the regional newspapers is that the connection will be finished is the summer of 2020 and it will cost 75M€.

So:

- Extension: 5719m;

- 4 tunnels with the lenght of 135m, 1218m, 427m e 409m and an emergency gallery on the tunnel of 1218m with a length of 332m;

- 6 bridges;

- 4 roundabouts
