We seem to have a lot of threads on a lot of different topics but none on the social issues affecting Pakistan. If this is the wrong sub-forum for this thread than I apologise, I didn't know where else to put this thread. Mods are free to move it, or even merge it if another thread like this exists.

Boys outnumber girls in Pakistan

Saturday, October 27, 2007
ISLAMABAD: China and other Asian countries in which a traditional preference for males is abetted by modern medical technology are becoming bachelor nations.

The bride shortage in South Korea is so severe that companies in Seoul advertise Vietnamese wives for desperate Korean men, says a special report by Los Angeles Times.

Taiwan and Pakistan have vastly more male babies than female ones. India faces almost as great a bachelor crisis as China - by 2020, India might have 28 million men who cannot find wives. As in China, Indian prosperity has made the problem worse: The country’s starkest gender imbalances occur in some of its wealthiest states.

Today, roughly 120 boys are born in China for every 100 girls, perhaps the worst gender imbalance in modern human history. Within 15 years, the country might have 30 million men who cannot find wives. That could mean serious trouble.

China’s one-child policy, launched around the eighties and still in force with some minor exceptions, has restored the gender imbalance, report says.

^^ Another idiotic report by some jackass journalist. He probably read a news-report about this population crisis in India and China and threw Pakistan's name in it just to keep the story relevant to his audience. Pakistan is not facing any such problem since there is a strong social stigma attached to getting an abortion (not to mention that it is illegal in Pakistan). This is not the case in India and China hence this gender imbalance over there.

Sex ratio at Birth (male/female):

India : 1.12
China: 1.12
Pakistan: 1.05
US: 1.05
UK: 1.05
