Ita, I sometimes wonder, if it is the same Earth you're living on. You could start by reading the works of Garlieb Merkel, especially his "The Latvians" (Die Letten). There are pretty colorful descriptions of how German aristocracy treated local peasants at the end of 18th century. Even if there were German intellectuals, who respected Latvians and Estonians, such as Stender, Merkel, Eisen, Snell, for most of landowners peasants were real slaves. So no need to glorify the German past of our land just because of the nice houses, and there is no need to pointlessly argue in "what if.." tense, because you cannot change the history, we have what we have.
