Rep. Manny Pacquiao, PBA superstar James Yap and Teng brothers Jeron and Jerick are among the celebrities invited to grace the opening of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa which fires off on May 4 at the Laguna Sports Complex in Sta Cruz.

Governor Jeorge “ER” Ejercito said his province is ready for the hosting of the biggest and grandest national sports competition held in Laguna for years.

Filipino boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao will lead a star-studded opening ceremony of the Palarong Pambansa in Laguna next Monday, state-run Philippines News Agency reported Wednesday.

The PNA report said Pacquiao will join Filipino Winter Olympian Michael Martinez, actor and former Palaro swimmer Enchong Dy, basketball star James Yap and track and field team captain Jericho Estregan in the torch lighting.

There will be five regional qualifiers that will produce the final cast of athletes competing in the next Philippine National Games.

Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia announced the change of format in the PNG yesterday as he noted that a number of athletes capture multiple gold medals without a real challenge from the opposition in the competition that serves as a source of talents for the Philippine team.

We are pleased to inform you that the PSC is set to conduct Batang Pinoy 2014 pursuant to Executive Order No. 44, also known as the Philippine Youth Games – Batang Pinoy.

In partnership with the Philippine Olympic Committee, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Department of Education and the respective Local Government Units, this national program enjoins participation of children born 1999 onwards.

This year, the actual competition schedule is as follows:

Mindanao Qualifying Leg (Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur) 10 – 14 September
Visayas Qualiying Leg (Kalibo, Aklan) 21 – 25 October
Luzon Qualifying Leg (Naga City) 11 – 15 November
National Finals (Bacolod City) 09 – 13 December

IN ITS bid to claim the fourth overall crown, Baguio City allocated P1.5 million to fund the delegates for the upcoming 2014 Batang Pinoy-Luzon Leg.

With Naga City as host, the Summer Capital is hoping the earmarked fund will be enough to strengthen its attempt to defend last year’s crown when the annual sports competition kicks-off this coming November 11-15.
