on SSC you mostly see skyscrapers and modern high-rises in pudong, there are n pictures of Pudong skyline, Jin Mao and Orient Pearl Tower, well they are only part of the Shanghai. but many people on SSC perceive pudong as the only Shanghai, no wonder some people call it the "skyscrapers theme park". and Shanghai is viewd as a city withouth character. I am not against skyscrapers but i also like Shanghai on the other side of the huangpu river. In this theaad, you will explore the old shanghai back in its golden days , 20's to 40's when it was the NO1 city "east of the suez canal".

before enjoy the pictures, take some time to read this, Shanghai street names, the old and the new.

Very informative pictures. Looks very European!!! How many of those colonial buildings are still there? Is that France Club still around?

Also, that list with all the old names for the streets, you don't happen to have their current names in pinyin (i don't read Chinese)?

most of the buidlings are still there, but the street scene is different, there's no street car anymore for example.

it's just a nickname. a large part of Shanghai (and probably the most beautiful part) was French concession. Saigon in vietnam is also known as the Paris of the Orient for similar reaons.

Thanks for all these pictures ! :)
I've always thought that the Shangaï of the 1930's was really fascinating.
It also reminds me "Tintin et le Lotus Bleu" (1934) :

As a chinese i am not very proud of the bund or french concession because its not really chinese but neverless that bend along the bund is truly magnificent ... it serves as an international collection of art deco accomplishment
hk also has similar buildings during that era ...
with a stronger british influence ...
however unlike shanghai they are almost all down ...

any pictures of older neighborhoods of shanghai???
like those shikumen neighborhoods???

The French Club is now the lobby of the Okura Garden Hotel, 58 Maoming South Road. The Garden Hotel itself is an ugly tower sitting on top of the former French Club.
