Though it is one of the biggest cities of Latin America, the golden age of Lima was during the centuries when most of the continent belonged to the Spanish Empire. It was the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru and that can be easily seen in its catholic churches of hundreds of years old and who also show the concentration of wealth of the colonial era that you may only find in some cities of Mexico. Appart from the obvious differences, Lima shares a lot with Los Angeles when it comes to its urban sprawl: every district and region is very different from each other and the extension of the whole city is huge, appart from the feeling of being several towns connected by the natural growth instead of a real interaction between neighborhoods of one big system. The most famous place in Lima is MIraflores, specially for the Love Park and the rocky beach in front of the Pacific Ocean. This area is protected against the tsunamis though contained cliffs. However, the rest of the city is clearly far from the opulence of Miraflores, having instead more similarities to the other cities of the Andes.

One architectural style usually unites the big public and private palaces of Lima: the colonial revival of Lima. That is the case of the Palace of the Government of Peru, who’s also mixed with a strong influence of the baroque. He is part of a set of several gorgeous buildings in front of the Plaza Mayor, specially the Archbishop’s Palace and the Municipal Palace, who also adds two main characteristics of the style: the wooden balconies and the yellow painting of the facade. A few blocks away, in front of the Paseo de los Héroes Navales, lies the Palace of Justice, who brakes this logic and utilizes the neoclassic style (often used by the Justice System in the whole world). Also in front of the same park is the Rímac Building (or Roosevelt House), with an outstanding french academicism, a style that is very rare to see in the country. And finally, at Miraflores, the famous Municipality, who serves as a cultural focus of the district and who also gets back to the colonial revival that distinguish the city.

Miraflores is the richest place and the essential district for the foreign tourists. Its epicenter lies between three major points: the Miraflores and John F. Kennedy parks, the area of the Lover Park and the Malecón Balta (Avenue), and the sector of the Shopping Larcomar and the Marriott Hotel. The coast of Miraflores is pretty interesting to take a look at because it’s prepared to defend the city against the tsunamis: the heavy urbanization actually starts after an artificial rocky beach, a highway, some public spaces and a huge contained rocky wall.
