Lima: Archbishop's Palace

Province/Department: Lima
City: Lima
Place: Archbishop's Palace

The Archbishop’s Palace is one of the most emblematic buildings of Lima. Situated amongst a strict spanish urban planning, the residence of the archbishop is symbolically placed in front of the political power, just in front of the Plaza Mayor of Lima. The palace is the perfect example of the colonial revival of this particular region (“neoplateresco” in spanish), with two salient balconies, marble floors, wooden columns on its interiors and a gorgeous vitreaux on the roof of the main hall. Nowadays it’s a museum with historical pieces, both from the colonial and contemporary periods.

Lima: Cathedral & Churches of Lima

Province/Department: Lima
City: Lima
Place: Cathedral & Churches of Lima

Except for the cases of some mexican cities, Lima probably has the richest repertoire of colonial catholic temples of Latin America. The list is leaded by the Cathedral, with a colonial revival architecture that specially flourished in Lima (in spanish: “Neocolonial Limeño o Neoplateresco”) and 15 internal chapels. The Basilica of San Francisco is the second most important temple, known for its huge system of catacumbs. Few blocks away from the Plaza Mayor is also the Basilica of Santo Domingo, who stands out in the historical district due to its tall pink tower. And far away from the Downtown of Lima, in Miraflores, lies the Parish of the Virgen Milagrosa, who also follows the same architectural style of the other temples of the city.

Lima: Jorge Chávez International Airport

Provine/Department: Lima
City: Lima
Place: Jorge Chávez International Airport

Along with São Paulo-Guarulhos and El Dorado-Bogotá, the Jorge Chávez is the third big airport who serves as a middle point between final destinations of Latin America, specially from/to Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. It received more than 17.000.000 passengers in the last few years and it recently became the center of attention of the region due to the construction of the second runway.

Machu Picchu

Province: Urubamba
Place: Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a demonstration of the potential of the humanity. Without the technology we have today, the Inca Empire managed to build an entire city in the middle of the mountain and the jungle of the Amazonas. Who built it and why is still a mistery, like the case of the construction of the Pyramids of Egypt. The popularity of Machu Picchu as its known today began with Hiram Bingham, who rediscovered the city (another people rediscovered earlier in the last centuries). When he went there for the first time, the city was covered by the jungle. Machu Picchu has public squares, lots of houses (most of them without roofs), and temples for the gods of their culture.

Palace of Justice:
Did you know this imposing Palace of Justice was inspired by the equally impressive Palace of Justice in Brussels?
