Malaysia is set to have its first animation theme park with the construction of the Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS) – a RM450 million partnership project between Sanderson Group and Perak Corporation Berhad – in the ground-breaking ceremony here today.

With the Menteri Besar, Dato Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir and the Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz in attendance, the ceremony also sees MAPS as being the state’s key project and having both official endorsement by the Perak State Government and Malaysia’s Tourism Ministry.

Construction work has commenced on a major new theme park in Malaysia.

Development on the Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS) got underway on Saturday (29March 2014), with a major ground-breaking ceremony in the Ipoh region of the Malay Peninsula.

The project, which is being developed at a cost of MYR450 million (US$138m), is being undertaken by Perak Corporation Bhd and Australia’s Sanderson Group. Once open, it is expected to provide a huge new tourist attraction to the Malaysian state of Perak.

“Although Perak… is notably the most visited state in Malaysia by domestic tourists, with up to 5.85m visitors last year, most tourists tend to visit the state only for a brief while without spending the night,” said Aminuddin Md Desa, chief executive of Perak Corporation Bhd.

“Thus, the development of MAPS will then seek in boosting Perak to realise its full potential as one of Malaysia’s top tourist destinations, where tourists can also experience a world-class theme park adventure, which includes over 40 rides and attractions as well as a variety of themed food & beverage and retail outlets throughout a 52-acre (21-hectare) site,” he added.

Scheduled to open its doors by the end of 2015, MAPS Perak will feature six different zones: Animation Square, Fantasy Forest, Live Action, Space Zone, DreamWorks and the Lakeside Zone. It will also include a zone dedicated to DreamWorks characters, such as Mr Peabody & Sherman, Casper the Friendly Ghost, The Croods and Megamind.

Alongside the 40 rides, attractions will include a car stunt show, and developers say MAPS will be the only ‘live broadcast’ theme park in Malaysia, with real-time footage from the park being shown on the internet. The majority of the theme park will be indoors and air-conditioned.

Following the initial development of MAPS, a second phase will include hotels, serviced apartments, a waterpark and retail outlets.
