Perth is Australia's fourth largest city with a population of around two million people. It is the only major metropolis on the western coast of Australia.

It is the capital of the state of Western Australia, which by itself would be one of largest territories on the planet if it were an independent country.

Given the distance between the city and the cities of the eastern half and the sparseness of the population in the west, Perth is also regarded as one of the most remote cities in the world, even though in terms of travel times, it is closer to Asia and Europe than most of Australia.

Perth is also a young city by international standards with the first settlement taking place in 1829.

And wondering why it got the name of Perth - in honour of a town and seat in the British House of Commons with the same name (Perth, Scotland).

The city itself has been subject to a number of booms stemming from mining booms within the state. The most recent one has been over the past few years though it has slowed. A number of mining companies are based in Perth due to their promixity to the mines. Also Perth is home to thousands of those miners but flyout to the mining settlements when called to work for usually two weeks at a time and return home when rostered off.

Looks like a American west coast city such as San Diego. Nice pics.

Certainly is a hidden gem. The setting on swan lake I believed it's called makes the cbd perfectly beautiful. With the new waterfront project, Perth will definitely become recognised. I know a lot of Brits love it and so do I!

Big changes are due with the construction of Elizabeth Quay over the next few years.

Hay Street Mall, Murray Street Mall & Forrest Place

For the out of towners, there are 900 shops located within this part of the city stretching over three city blocks. It is home to the major department stores and a wide variety of speciality shops.

Perth Bell Tower
The Bell Tower is a museum focusing on bells and is home to the twelve bells of St-Martin-in-the-Field. They are royal bells and the only ones to have left England.

The Swan Bells:

Atop the museum is an observation deck with awesome views of the Swan River.

Cottesloe Beach

I think a trip to Perth would not be complete without a visit to Cottesloe Beach, 11 km west of the city on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Fortuantely the suburb of Cottesloe has a railway station but you have a ten minute mostly uphill walk before you get to the beach.

When I paid a visit, The Indian Ocean was pumping a swell and hence was a bit limited in what I could capture from the groyne which usually is where the postcard shots of the beach are taken.

Not a pleasant day to be in the water at all. I did see a few surfers braving it.

Some proof right there I couldn't move further up the groyne.
