Cape Town has joined the 'Happy' trend. Filmmakers have produced a video with Capetonian extras dancing to the hit single by Pharrell Williams.
The American singer made the world’s first 24-hour music video with the song.
The single is the first single from Williams’ album G.I.R.L. and is also on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack.
The single, according to Billboard, “became the first single for 57 years to start a third separate run at No. 1.”
It also “sold its millionth copy in the territory last week, making Williams only the second artist after the Beatles to appear on three UK million-sellers inside 12 months”.
South African filmmakers Shamiel Soni and Tannan Woods directed the video which has since received over 65,000 views on Youtube since March 24. It follows the same format as the Williams’ video with extras walking and dancing to the song.
The Cape Town version includes people dancing in various locations all over Cape Town, both well-known as well as areas on the Cape flats, and a township. It was hailed on Twitter as being fair and representative of all of Cape Town.
Dylan Valley (@broslovo) said it “Feels like it was directed by someone who actually 'gets'Cape Town. Didn't show same ol stereotypes”
