MANILA, Philippines – The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) is proposing fiscal incentives for small- and medium-sized domestic shipbuilders to encourage them to produce more vessels.

"We are talking with the DBP (Development Bank of the Philippines) and Land Bank (of the Philippines) to lend money to the shipbuilders so that if they have orders of new vessels, they have the money to sustain the construction," Marina Deputy Administrator Nicasio Conti said on the sidelines of the 13th Development Policy Research Month on Tuesday, September 1.

The country’s efforts to fight illegal fishing will soon get a boost as the government begins the construction of two units of steel hulled offshore vessels costing P360 million.

Bfar officials said this marks the first time that a local ship manufacturer will construct multimission vessels. The agency said a medium-sized Filipino ship-making firm bagged the contract for the construction of the vessels. The government awarded the construction of the multimission vessels to Josefa Slipways Inc. It was designed by US-based company Incat Crowther.

HANJIN DELIVERS PH-made CRUDE CARRIER SHIP (VLCC)

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT—Despite the downturn of the global shipping industry, officials of the Korean-owned shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction-Philippines (HHIC-Phil) Inc. said orders for commercial vessels have not waned. Chung Gwang-suk, HHIC-Phil president, said the company had delivered MV GENER8 HECTOR, the first Philippine-made very large crude carrier (VLCC), to its clients based in the United States and Singapore. “While the global shipbuilding market has experienced rough sailing over the past few years, HHIC-Phil has taken exception as it continues to maintain its foothold in the international front, capitalizing on our technological advancements and highly skilled workforce,” Chung said in a statement. The VLCC, which sailed out of the waters of this free port on Jan. 8, measures 333 meters in length with breath of 60 meters and deadweight of 299,019 metric tons. “The vessel’s towering size is so breathtaking that it is comparable to US-made Nimitz class 100,000-ton aircraft carriers,” Chung said. The ship, he said, was ordered and jointly owned by Gener8 in the US and Navig8 in Singapore. —ALLAN MACATUNO

Its endurance per specs is just 7 days, meaning, it has to have a base near it, about 750 nautical miles max. (2 days travel at cruising speed of 15 knots). But that patrol ship can do its job with the help of its high speed RHIB (zodiac type) boats!

They're fisheries boat so I don't think they will go where PCG is supposed to go. They will also order 4 more hopefully, but I think they need more than 6 so not stretch them out.

New Filipino-owned facility building 10 BFAR patrol boats

November 19, 2017 Joel Dizon

Josefa Slipways Inc., the Filipino shipbuilder that constructed the first two 50.5-meter Multi-mission Offshore Vessels (MMOV) of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has opened a new shipbuilding and ship repair facility on November 18.

The new facility of Josefa Slipways is located at the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) in Sual, Pangasinan. It is the first and currently the only one in the region, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

Moreover, at the inauguration of the said facility, keel laying ceremonies for three roll-on/roll-off passenger (RoPax) vessels owned by Shogun Ships Corp. was conducted.

The new shipbuilding facility is also expected to build 10 BFAR patrol boats, DOTr said.

BFAR’s two MMOV built by Josefa Slipways in its Navotas facility, Lapu-Lapu (MMOV 5001) and Francisco Dagohoy (MMOV 5002), were launched in August 2017.

Sneak Peek inside MV Isla Simara, a newly Filipino made RoRo Vessel equipped with the most advanced navigation and evacuation system to be operating in the Matnog - Allen Route next week

The 468-seater passenger ship with a 12-meter long vehicle ramp is the brainchild of Shogun Ships Corp. Inc. and Josefa Slipways Inc. It is the first RoRo ship in the Philippines with a modern Automation and Control System that can be monitored real-time in the company’s head office. It is also the first local RoRo ship with a Marine Evacuation System, a lifesaving device that is similar to an airplane’s evacuation chute through which passengers can slide directly to a lifeboat without getting wet.

She was built in Josefa Slipways, Inc. in Navotas City which means she is a proud Philippine-made vessel. A vessel that is made by the Filipinos for the Filipinos

We have the capability and the smarts. We just don't have the budget then? Because according to Austal there's a larger catamaran in the works coming out this year and a trimaran later on, which will be the longest high speed ferry to be constructed in the Philippines.
We don't have economies of scale so nobody is investing. The used market is huge and shipping lines can buy from Vietnam if they want brand new.
