Baia Sprie was one of the most important mining centers in north-western Romania, exploitation of gold and silver being mentioned in documents written around 1411, the time when the Saxons colonized the region.

The third richest archaeological museum in Romania (after the national history museums in Bucharest and Constanța), the museum in Deva boasts especially with the discoveries from Sarmisegetusa Regia - the former capital of Dacian Kingdom - and Ulpia Traiana Sarmisegetusa - the former capital of Roman province of Dacia, two archaeological sites situated at ~40 km distance.
