No more entrance fees for Bokor resort

Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday said there will no longer be entrance fees to visit Thansor Bokor resort in Kampot province from Sunday.

According to a post to Mr Hun Sen’s Facebook page, the Sokha Hotel company, which runs the popular tourist destination atop Bokor Mountain, has agreed to drop the entrance fees for all residents and tourists.

“I hope this will lead to even more tourism activity up there,” Mr Hun Sen said.

Soy Sinol, director of Kampot’s tourism department, said the move is good news.

Mr Sinol said the Sokha Hotel company was charging between $0.25 to $5 for entry depending on the size of the vehicle and whether a tourist or Cambodian was driving it.

“Bokor National Park welcomed 600,000 people so far this year,” he said. “So, I think that number will only rise with the ticket fee being waived.”

Last month, the government also ordered the company to revert the resort’s name back to Thansur Bokor resort after it changed it to Sokha Thansur resort, leading to outrage from locals.

Sokha Hotel Group, the hospitality division of the Sokimex Investment Group, celebrated the opening of its newest hotel atop Kampot province’s Bokor Mountain on Monday.

The new luxury hotel is a renovated version of the historical 1920s Le Bokor Palace, built by French colonialists, and will retain the same name.

“Le Bokor Palace is a historic hotel that our country’s treasure, our company has fully refurbished the building, preserving the original features and recreating its colonial interior design,” said General Manager Frugerge Philippe in a press release.

This hotel is Sokha Group’s ninth hotel in Cambodia and its first in Kampot.

What do you mean by this statement? Please explain!
It is a place with long and important history. It used to be open to anyone to go and see it. It was like this for past 20 years and especially last 6 years (since the road was redone) or so it's been pretty much #1 sight in Kampot for locals and tourists. Now it's private high end expensive resort targeted to wealthy locals and chinese and you can only go to there stay in hotel. You think most locals afford to stay there? Same thing like some beaches in Sihanoukville. You think locals can go for example to Sokha Beach or some part of the Indepence beach (even though law say beach is public property).
