Very nice photos.

In this photo you said that the ATC was in the background. Did you mean the Air Traffic Control tower at the Vienna's airport? I didn't know it was so close to the center of Vienna.

I don't know who paid for the big mosque, but one good guess would be the Muslim members of OPEC that meet in Vienna all the time. How come OPEC chose Vienna as a place to meet? I think they even have a headquarters building there.

Yes, I meant the new ATC tower at Vienna airport.
It is about 10 miles south of the historical city center.

Actually, for a city of two million people, I actually thought it looked pretty compact.
I was using a 300mm lens with a very cheap 2x tele converter.

That explains why it looks a lot more compact than it actually is and why the quality of the pictures isn't that overwhelming.

That's the tower of the Ferwärme Wien (district heating plant), designed by the artist F. Hundertwasser and completed in 1992.

Here's a picture of a church he designed in Bärnbach, Styria:

@Peter_T: You should definitely enter some of those photos in the Urban Photo Contest, which starts every Saturday!

So with a 300mm lens and a 2x tele converter, your basically taking pics with a 600mm zoom lens? Amazing!

Honestly, Vienna is the best city in Europe. I really love it! Gasometer was fun, I've never seen something like this before. Go Vienna go! =)

I was wondering how the ATC and the Airport can be just 10 miles - 16 km from the city center? I remember that the airport was 23 kms away from the city. I know that the road going there is not straight but still should be more then 16 kms in aereal distance IMO.

The place and a considerable aerea of where the mosque is build, is owned by Kings, Sheiks and other rulers of Arab Gulf countries. They have holiday summer homes in there.

As for the OPEC HQ being in Vienna, you have to remember that Austria was a neutral country from the end of the WWII, only recently they have integrated intoo Europe (EU). Austria was divided in zones ruled by the war winners including Russia and the country regained indipendence only in early '50s.

Since then it was tightly ruled similarly to a socialist society. When I lived there 1998 - 1999, they have just allowed private radio stations so the city was full of flyiers and boards advertising them. Private newspapers were allowed while I was there and until I left the TV market wasn't yet liberalised. Apart ORF1 and 2 there was only another TV station TW1 transmiting via-cable, propably runned by municipality.

Vienna is a real multicultural place, despite the aparences.

I love the city though, beutyfull, clean, amaizing public transport and well taken care off. :)

Thank you for posting quality photos of my former home! I used to live in the 21st district in fact--which is lame and far away from everything except the donauinsel--which is an advantage in the summer.

Beautiful photo shots indeed. Vienna looks like a fantastic city. If you don't mind me saying, It look like Calgary just a tiny little bit.

Any chance we will get more in the near future and even some street level shots ? :booze:

Vienna is huge in aerea, what you see on those pictures is just a small part of the town. Vienna has 23 districts + the airport that is numbered 30 (???). It has also at least two satelite towns: Baden and Vienna New city (Wiener Neustadt).

Damn Vienna looks ugly in winter! Beutiful city in Summer, and Spring though. Awesome picture's by the way Peter_T.

Calgary? Not one bit, low dense house's compared to the medium density architectualy stunning buildings of Vienna.

The distance between Stephansplatz (1. district) and Vienna airport is 18.5km / 11.6 miles (on the road)

Can anybody post some pics of other Friendensreich Hundertwasser builings?

Church of Bärnbach, Steiermark

Neuberg an der Mürz

Those are the only pics I could find at the moment.

Maybe I'll go take some pictures of the Hunderwasser House, in Vienna's 3. district, this weekend.
