A police officer has died following a training exercise in Manchester after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.

The male officer died in hospital after the incident, which took place in Newton Heath, about a mile from the city centre.

The incident happened at about 1135 BST On Thorp Road.

The officer was taken to North Manchester General Hospital following the incident, where he was pronounced dead later.

A police officer who died when he was shot in the chest during a training exercise, was hit by a shotgun round fired by a colleague, police said.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is conducting an inquiry into the incident.

It said Pc Terry was struck by a single shot discharged from a shotgun.


This demonstrates the dangers that police officers face on our behalf

He was killed while officers used "special munitions" designed to stop vehicles containing armed criminals.
