data is from 2001 and you can find it here. They only account for parishes that have city status, some urban areas may have town status or no status, so that may be the issue. In here which is something easy to see where the numbers come from. And is like i'm saying they only putted into account areas with status, if an adjacent area with even 1000 people per sq km is not putted into account.

So 63% of Portuguese live in Lisbon or Porto urban areas? Aren't these numbers overblown a little:sly:?
that's a bit more than 2 million, actually, in official metro areas that's almost 4 million, but most people live agglomerated in these two large regions, as these metro areas also include some of the cities mentioned in the TOP 10, but are not "conurbated" (?!) with Porto or Lisbon and don't rely on it, and the country is small. Well, it's complex!

2001 data (so of course it is outdated)

Lisbon
3.34 million (wider metro)
2,641,006 (official metro)
564,657 (municipality)

Porto
2.99 million (wider metro)
1,551,950 (official metro)
238,954 (municipality)

Well, to tell the truth is like that.
Portugal becamed a very unbaleced country in terms of distribution of population as you can see in the map.
What´s happening is that now the interior of portugal is, with some exceptions, an unhabitated place where some times you have villages with just 2 or 4 people, in ages aroun 75 and 85 years old.
The litoral with the Northwest around Porto and Lisbon region are now places with big suburban areas and with trafic jams and all the inconvenients attached to big population concentration.
And the future scenario is of a reinforcement of this trend, with big investements made by the central government, specially in Lisbon.
It´s catch 22, because the inreasig needs of those 2 areas force to bigger investment that brings more people and because portugal has limited resources the rest of the country is putted in second plan.

Lisbon's metropolitan area has 2.6 million people, and Porto metropolitan area has 1.5 (with Povoa do Varzim) million, there are the 2 only/biggest M.A. in Portugal.

Dear tom, English here please. You obviously have no idea on what you are speaking, and I can't blame you for knowing very little about Portugal as you live in Brazil, since just after you were born. So, if you want to learn something please don't talk as if you know something, but read and learn, not only because you know nothing about this, but also because of your age.

2001 CENSUS DATA
Lisbon
3.34 million <--- Lisbon Metropolitan Region (AMLisbon + Leiria and others)
2.64 million <---- Lisbon Metropolitan Area (Lisbon urban area+ Setubal+ Povoa de Santa Iria + etc)
1.5 million <--- Lisbon Urban Area
564,657 <--- Lisbon Municipality

Porto
2.99 million <--- Porto Metropolitan Region (AMPorto + Braga + Guimarães + Famalicão...)
1.55 million <---- Porto Metropolitan Area (Porto urban area+Povoa de Varzim+Vila do Conde+Santo Tirso+Espinho+S.J.Madeira, etc.)
1 million <--- Porto Urban Area
238,954 <--- Porto Municipality
my first post refers only to urban areas, not caring for municipal boundaries. In Portugal there wasn't a process to expand cities by annexing neighbouring ones, just like in Barcelona for instance. So, the situation is more complex, but you can easily simplify it, as I did in the first post, and everybody in the streets knows that. And this is a study made by someone who is a specialist, not some 15 or 21 yr old boy lol , maybe the (urban) numbers are a bit LOW, but that's because of the very strict criteria that was used and the numbers are rather old.

hahahahah. who told u that i live in Brazil? better, who told that i'm 15, or 21? I'm a old 51 years guy, that lives in Porto, ok? better?

Ok, any way, i'm sure about what im talking. And im sure that you just want put Povoa de Varzim, a small portuguese city, in the top 10. xD It's strange u put it as the 7th URBAN AREA, cuz the city has less than 100000, oh and don't forget, your city, is a small part of Porto metropolitan area. ;D

That has 1.7 million people. I can't see what is wrong about this?!? but .........................
