Power and Electricity in Dubai

Count me naive but I was wondering; with all the tower developments going up in Dubai right now one question seems to be nagging at the back of my mind:

Where is Dubai going to get all the electrical power to keep the lights on in all these brilliant new towers? The UAE does not have the geography nor the water resources to produce hydroelectric power nor does it have any nuclear power plants (to my knowledge). Is it producing the power through oil or natural gas? Are there any utilities projects in the works?

Thanks
Mike

Someone said that there is 1 billion dollars expansion work on the main Dubai power generator and water de-salination plant.

They are looking on the possibility of nuklear powered generators, as well on solar and wind power. They are planing to use extensively solar power for The World islands, however they are still on the planing and testing stage.
Easy!! Qatar's Natural Gas.. By 2006 Qatar will start pumping NG from its North Field into AD, and then into Oman. There is a proposed pipeline that connects from Qatar/AD pipeline and into Dubai.

You alwasy advertise this :p dolphinenergy is still an emarati company.
Offcourse I have too, this company and AlKhaleej Gas are going to secure the gas supplies of the gulf for at least a centuary and it will also contribute to the economies of all the countries involved. Yes its an emarati/TOTAL (French) company pumping gas from out field. :p
Solar power is great but it requires a huge intial investment plus a great bit of know how for managing it over the long run. Very efficient source of energy for the Middle East (365 days of sunshine a year) but not that easy.
Solar power will never work for the gulf region due to two main reasons. Humidity and sand storms. The dew from humidity plus sand blown from sand storms would really be a problem for solar power panels.
true
but i think scientists could develop something to protect the cells against humidity and sand

in germany for example a certain number of houses has solar cells on the roof. and they're protected against rain, so there is a way to protect it against humidity.

sand might be the major problem, because i can only see a complete covering of the cells as a reasonable solution, but the material has to be glass and who is cleaning all the glass covering from dust, dirt and sand regularly?
Your right, we cant have one guy standing there cleaning the glass every time sand blows. It will never work. Yestarday at around 6 pm I had my car washed pretty good. By 8 pm I was about to leave the house in my car, as i was doing so i placed my hands on the car's hood to examine who clean it was, all i could feel was dust and sand on it !!!?? It wasnt that windy and I live in a vey very dense area of doha where there is hardly any sand !?!

so imagine these solar panels outside in the middle of the desert, just wont work.
increase the ration of labours to solar pannels , LOL ,
just kidding

no, i think nuclear power seems more logical, and natural gas for the next century, are u for real, thats 100 years man, i doubt it , anyway, something has to be done to replace oil in order to generate more electrical power
While solar power may seem like a reasonable choice given the climate of the gulf region, it is simply not feasible for the increased power demands of the area. The equiptment required simply takes up too much land ( / roof) space to be usable, especially in a country where space is at a premium. I think it would be wonderful to see Dubai lead the way a resurgence of nuclear power, but I would doubt that the political underpinnings of the wealthy people flocking to the area will allow that to happen. Natural gas will likely be the drug of choice because it is plentiful in the region and cleaner than oil or coal. The time it takes to construct the plants is also much shorter than a large coal facility (~2-3 years vs. 7+).
well, couldnt they build and place they solar panels some where in the desert and the connect them to the city, through undergroup, or some kind connection system, i mean, it doesnt have to be on the roof ?? unless i am wrong, some one please correct me, or explain to me
i am gonna contact dewa, and see if they know or have anything planned
Solar energy might be used in World project

The ongoing World project might use solar air-conditioning and solar lighting in some of its islands if the new technology launched at Dubai Techno Park yesterday proves to be efficient and beneficial for the development, a top Nakheel official said yesterday.

Speaking at the launch of the Dh50 million Pacific Controls Systems green building at Dubai Techno Park, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), and Chairman of Nakheel, said: "The solar energy in a limited way has been used in this area for the past 25 years, but only when it was needed.
In our World project the energy is a problem. We are using diesel. If the new technology brought by Pacific Controls Systems proves to be saving energy, we are ready to utilise it in some of the islands within our World project,” he said as quoted by Khaleej Times. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
This still doesn't tell me where the power will be coming from for all the nearly completed. By what method does the UAE presently generate electricity?
solar

I have seen solar panels on parking ticket machines.....telephone booths .....road signs but I suppose this is small scale stuff.

the best way to warm water is to run it through black hoses spread over the surface of the sand............oooh hot!
Dubai seems to have infinite money for building stuff, maybe they could develop a fusion reactor!, certain people might not like the idea of there being nuclear power stations in the middle east.
i want water rods through the dunes!

solar/geo thermal!

cheap and feasable!

my showers are always too hot in the summer btw!

Who cares what Bush thinks, he doesn't seem to care what everyone else thinks of him !
