(CNN) -- A Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has crashed in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agency Interfax reported Thursday.

Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it lost contact with MH17, and the flight's last known position was over Ukrainian airspace, the airline said on Twitter.

The jet is a Boeing 777, according to Interfax.

The plane reportedly went down near the border between Russia and Ukraine.

A Malaysia Airlines plane, flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, has crashed after it was shot down at an altitude of 10km over eastern Ukraine, according to Russia's Interfax news agency.

It said the Boeing 777 plane carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew crashed near the Russian border in Ukraine.

The plane was found “burning on the ground,” according to the report.

The aircraft came down close to town of Shaktarsk in the rebellion-wracked region of Donetsk after disappearing from the radar and teams from the emergency services were trying to reach the scene, an unnamed security source told Interfax-Ukraine news agency, according to AFP.

Malaysia Airlines have now confirmed that they "have lost contact with flight MH17". – July 17, 2014.

Al-Fatihah...
Im Shocked!!!!
Russian separatists in this area of the Ukraine claim to have shot down an AN-26 aircraft of the Ukrainian Army. Looks like they mistook a civilian airliner for a military plane.

Yeah Dengilo, better just called for a shutdown....I blame it on the management. They should not fly there if they knew the route is unsafe. Just shutdown before more peoples die.

The Boeing 777 was brought down by a Buk ground-to-air missile, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry quoted by the news agency said.

A Boeing 777 Malaysian airlines plane has reportedly been shot down along the Russian-Ukrainian border, according to an official from Ukraine’s Ministry of the Interior.

The border is currently a war zone with sustained fighting between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatist rebels. And within the past month, the separatists have brought down a number of Ukrainian military aircraft.

The cause of the crash isn’t conclusively known at the moment. Pro-Russian separatists may have nothing to do with it. But they have been successful in destroying aircraft in recent months of the conflict.

Armed with Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS), the separatists have been taking down Ukrainian military aircraft since the beginning of June. On June 13, separatists shot down a Ukrainian transport plane that had been carrying 40 paratroopers and nine crew members.

At least 10 other Ukrainian aircraft — all of them significantly lower-flying than a Boeing 777 — have been shot down since the rebels started using MANPADS according to a count kept by military aviation expert David Cenciotti, including five Mi-24 Hinds, two Mi-8 helicopters, one An-2, one An-30, and the Ukrainian transport plane.

According to an adviser to the Ukraine Interior Minister, the plane was shot down by a Buk ground-to-air missile system.

The pro-Moscow separatists have denied responsibility for shooting down the Malaysian flight, according to The Interpreter.
