Updated to new render

Name: Premier Hotel Umhlanga
Location: Ridgeside, Umhlanga
Use: Hotel

A proposal for a new 4 star hotel for the Premier Hotel Group set high above the sea on the Umhlanga Ridge allowed GAPP an opportunity to develop a concept that reflects the ocean which the hotel faces and take into consideration the city context at ground level. The building is massed so as to maximise sea views to the north and the hotel cascades in sections, evoking the roll of the waves and swells of the ocean at its feet.

New hotel for Umhlanga
Wed, 04 Dec 2013 8:41 AM

Premier Hotels and Resorts have announced plans to build a new hotel in Umhlanga, north of Durban. The new hotel will be located next to the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, on Umhlanga Ridge.

The area has been identified as a rapid growth node in South Africa and is within accessible proximity to Durban’s King Shaka International Airport. Says Samuel Nassimov, the Group’s Managing Director: “This development is part of our strategy of identifying and expanding into key business nodes throughout the country. Umhlanga as a location is ideal as it allows us the opportunity to not only service the business tourism market but the leisure market too.”

The hotel will be a new-build property with approximately 160 sea facing rooms and conferencing, restaurant and spa facilities.

"The grading of Premier Hotel Umhlanga will operate in the same way as our other premium properties. In other words we will be offering a five-star service at four-star rates as part of our ongoing pledge to always offer more for less,” adds Nasimov.

This would be their largest scale hotel in terms of cost outlay so far. Unless you factor in the ICC component in East London.

This has much potential and will be kept busy if the KZN Sharks Board press ahead with plans for a new facility that incorporates a bigger better museum and a maritime college. Current plans valued around R1billion.
The grassed empty land towards the homes in the pic is where the Premier Hotel will be built. Gathering by the small site and that it is zoned for 10F that we could have a sizable height on this development. The new Gateway Private Hospital is right behind it.

any movement? we still not seen final renders...
“We are now designing a 160-room hotel in Umhlanga, Durban and we hope to start construction in November, with the hotel due to open about 18 months later.

So there is progress...

SA hotel chain announces expansion plans
By: Kim Emmanuel 24 May 2016 14:30 PM

Premier Hotels and Resorts International announced plans for further expansion in South Africa at its Gala Dinner on Saturday, at East London International Convention Centre celebrating 25 years.

Samuel Nassimov, MD of Premier Hotels and Resorts, said there are plans to add another three Premier properties within the next five years. The three additional hotels are planned for the areas of Umhlanga, Fourways and Sandton.

A site has already been acquired for the Umhlanga property and construction is expected to begin early 2017.

Details of Premier's repositioning were also revealed at the gala dinner. “We would like to sub-brand to get the fair share of the market because right now we offer full service, three of four star hotels,” said Nassimov.

Each of the sub-brands, Splendid Inn, Express Inn, Premier Resort and East London International Convention Centre, were rebranded with a different colour to represent the different market segmentation.

Premier’s Pinetown, Port Edward and King David hotels will all be rebranded under the Splendid Inn brand.

After waiting what feels like forever, tenders have been awarded on this one in the past month.
