Pride flag to fly at city hall, despite scheduling snafu

A ceremony will be held to raise the rainbow flag at Winnipeg's city hall on Friday to open Pride Week, after a last-minute intervention by the office of Mayor Sam Katz.

Pride Week, which celebrates the city's gay and lesbian community, has opened for the past six years with a flag-raising ceremony in the courtyard of city hall, hosted by a city councillor.

This year, the ceremony had been cancelled due to a "scheduling conflict," Pride Week organizers announced earlier this week.

"Quite a few of the councillors are not available because of a conference in Calgary," said spokesman Rob Cote. "We could not find a councillor who was either available or willing to attend the event."

There was confusion over when the courtyard was available, and when councillors were available, Cote said, adding his group takes responsibility for some of the disorganization.

The group was told that without a city councillor, the flag-raising ceremony could not go ahead, although the flag would still fly over city hall. Cote cancelled the ceremony.

But when media contacted the mayor's office to inquire about the matter, Cote got good news within the hour.

"The mayor's office has granted a concession to allow us to have the event even if a councillor is not available," Cote said.

A spokesperson for the mayor's office said the only councillor available could not attend at the time Pride Winnipeg requested, but the ceremony will go ahead anyway.

Cote says he's pleased with the result and has no hard feelings.

The rainbow flag will be raised at city hall at noon on Friday.

This is the kind of thing that I would expect would happen here, not a large city like Winnipeg. And instead of being in Calgary, they would be in Yanaizu. If they go there one more time they'll fill out their punch card and get a free Japanese sex robot. :)

Reminds me of what has happened here with past pride parades. This will be the first year that our current mayor will attend. He has been mayor since 2000 but has always somehow had a scheduling conflict and had to attend a barbeque or bake sale somewhere.
